yellow patches..
    #389576 - 09/09/01 05:00 PM (23 years, 7 days ago)

alright... i started out with 3 jars using a vermiculite and brown rice flower substrate. one jar became infected with green/black mold thus leaving me with 2 jars. currently i have yellow patches on the mycelium. i think that it's dead mycelium but i know for a fact that it isnt mold. is there a possibility that the mycelium can repair itself or are my jars doomed?

well i don't think it is dead mycelium. how long have they been growing for?

Ted: "Uh yeah, and I got you this paper bag to stop you from looking like James Brown in the Morning."
Darlene: "Oh come now, I don't look anything like James Brown."
Ted: "Hey kids, who does your mom look like in the morning?"
Kids... in unison: "James Brown!"
Darlene, "All right, thats enough... It's poison spaghetti for dinner tonight."

this would be my 4th attempt and first success at getting them to colonize.

usually a yellow patch is a response to too much moisture. it is usually just the waste products produced by the mycelium leaching out.

the simplest way to reduce moisture is to loosen the lid and invert the jar, thump it so the cake comes loose from the jar. this will allow more air circulation and if you have too much moisture, it can either run down into your verm layer or evaporate away.

good luck
