Storing Pasteurized Compost
    #3895401 - 03/10/05 12:03 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

So I have a compost batch going and I'm planning on pasteurizing all of it when done, but I'm not sure how long it can be stored. My plan is to bag it in filter patch bags...but does the transfer from the steam pasturization chamber (cooler) to the bags need to be done infront of a flow hood?? Pasteurization still allows for alot of bacteria, which is no problem if the substrate is used immediately, but the bacteria will proliferate over time...right? So if I used the substrate a year later, would the bacteria have proliferated to an extent where it would hamper mycelleum growth?

If anyone has links to research on this topic as well...I think lotsa people would be interested.

Thanks -MM

Pasteurized media should be colonized in two weeks or less. If not, it should be suspect contamed and removed from the grow environment

Even milk will not last in the fridge for a year, come on now, think this through.

For long term storage of mature compost, you would be better off - freezing blocks of it in vaccum sealed autoclave bags. THAT WILL HALT MICROBIAL ACTIVITY.

lol. Yea, freezing might help.

I pasturize my compost/manure in quart jars with filter disks in the lids. I always use them within a few days. I let a jar go for two weeks once after pasteurization and I almost puked from the smell when I opened it.
