Hrrrrmmmm... Corn Question for someone with Experience..
    #3893358 - 03/09/05 05:48 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

A FoaF knocked up some corn this morning, and they have been sitting in a TiT all day @ 85-87F. When they were just checked on, 3 of the 7 jars had what looked to be creamed corn collecting on the bottom. Would this be from burst corn kernels? and should they be scrapped? or is there some saving them? There were done by Alien's Corn Tek, almost to the letter..

Anyone with Corn Exp seen this? What is the cause of this?

DerGeist

There is corn that isn't burstable? It was a Popcorn Tek after all? Not Popped, but cracked, burst, whatever...

Is there a smell coming from them? It could be to much moisture, to many burst kernals, or bacterial contam. If contamed, it will smell sour and it will get creamier.

Corn can burst if simmered for to long, and yes, the usable kind too.

No Smell yet, just cream colored liquid collecting at the bottom. They noted several split kernels, not a majority, just some. The Jars were covered with Tyvek, and double layer of foil, knocked up as cleanly as possible for the conditions, and moved directly to the TiT. From descriptions it really does look like cream corn..
The question is.. Should they let it ride, and see what happens, or is it trash already?? They wouldn't say it's pooling on the bottom, just enough to be noticed..

The Tek was both Alien's and Deviant's Popcorn Tek. Simmer was actually cut down to 30 min, or just until the kernels were smashable with a good amount of finger force...

Thanks for the input..

DG

If you are using cracked corn it is not burstable, regular corn (which is what your posts specifys as far as im concerned)is burstable and also wont grow anything. If you used POPcorn it is burstable and will grow just fine.

You have a case of the 2wets, its prolly gonna contam if its not already.

Ok.. That might be true, but 98.5% of everything posted on this site referring to corn, is referring to popcorn, so in my error, just assumed that when I said corn, it would be taken as popcorn. There have been some posts related to feed corn, and cracked corn, however the majority refer to popcorn that can be store bought. I realize that your just naturally a dick, and not doing it on purpose, so I haven't ignored you yet, as you do know your stuff, and have experience to back up your poor teaching abilities. This FoaF is trying to learn, and has done more research, and reading then they care to go into, this however is something only experience can answer, and was not found in a search. So rather then pissing about what type of corn it is, now that it is established that it is, in fact Popcorn. Your point on specificity is well taken, and I should have been a bit more specific about the type. Now. How about some real input?

DG

They were thinking that it might be too wet with this "cream" on the bottom, so it will most likely be tossed before it goes south.

Theory? Simmer too long, caused kernels to be too soft, and break? They did cut the 45 min simmer to 30 min, they could try 20 I suppose. From what they have read also, Popcorn was quite resistant to over soaking, so they thought it was a bit more hearty then that.

Live and Learn I suppose.. I will relay this back.. Including the lesson in specifics...

You didn't simmer too long.. I pressure cook mine at 15psi for 70 minutes and I've consistently gotten the water content correct. The first time i tried popcorn i tried simmering for an hour and it didn't have nearly a high enough water content.

I left some of my popcorn soaking for about 3 days one time and they turned out fine.
You can try putting a small layer of vermiculite at the bottom to absorb excess water.

Talk to me again when you are ready to not be a lazy shit and type popcorn.

do you have any idea how many noobs come in here each day?

it is not that unreasonable to think that one of you may of used regular corn.

My teaching abbilities get it done, im a dickhead the way i am because its the only way to get my point accross to these smartass 14 year old kids who come in here telling me i dont know what im talking about.

i hope your jars turn out for the best, see ya round.

Interesting... The FoaF did a 30 min simmer, and then 1 hour at 15psi, they said it all looked fine after the PC.

Have you ever see this "cream" in your jars... Damn that just don't sound right.. I'll have they smell again for contams..

How long did it take to make the cream? Did you do the 45 minute drain?

Psycho... I may not agree with your delivery method, but I have read enough of your posts to know that you do know what you are talking about.. I do take your point of being specific, and realize that it does matter in this hobby.. The fact I did not type out Popcorn, was in fact an assumption that most anyone would also assume that I was refering to Popcorn when I said Corn..

Drained for 1 hour, Shaken the crap out of, and mixed top to bottom. :frown:

No Ideas, but they are going to give them a day or two, toss if it gets worse.

My advice: DO ignore that boy. Your first impulse was right.

Your corn just might be too wet, how long did you drain or did I miss that?

It was drained over the sink for 1 hourish, more then less.. It was also shaken often, and mixed well so it would drain evenly.. I will try and get a pic from the FoaF to post..

Yeah pics rule

drained for one hour, thats more then long enough!

I only did corn once, according to a PC only method. PC an hour, drain (20-30 mins), put in jars, PC an hour again.

Was my first non-cake substrate.

Later I heard that corn isnt very good as a plain substrate in itself. But can act as spawn. When you want to colonize a tub of straw.

Corn lacks some important nutrients which the mushrooms need to produce the valued alkaloids..... Next time I suggest you try some rye or wild bird seed (WBS).

You have a good go though mate!

I have some extra coal Psycho, we could go into business.. Lighten up man, if your tired of noobs, and imperfect people, perhaps you should consider a different hobby, something more like playing in traffic, perhaps? :P
