Is it absolutly necessary to pasturize casing soil?
    #3893187 - 03/09/05 03:07 PM (19 years, 24 days ago)

I am thinking about casing a few of my PF jars using peat moss and verm. I was wondering whether I can get by without pasturizing the Peat and Verm? or if it might turn out bad. I figured since the fully developed mycelin is able to fight off contam pretty well, that it would do fine on unpasturized soil. Thanks
Chris

You should sterilize it. Or pasteurize it. If you dont, it might survive. It might not. Do you care to take a risk?

I've had quite a few casings mixed straight out of the bag that turned out fine. But as Scatmanrav pointed out, why take a risk?

P. Cubensis doesn't require a biologically active casing layer to fruit, so it's in all of our best interest to be as sterile as possible in every step. That would include pasteurizing/sterilizing the casing layer.

if your set on not pasturizing (i don't) at least get some mechanics mesh and strain out the twigs and large chunks from the peat. Doing this will help eliminate some contamination problems.

Will Microwaving the mixture for five mins (as I have heard in the past) be sufficient enough, or will it kill alot of the nutrients. Also in a 50/50 casing tek written by Hawk it says to use a verm layer at the bottom, but does not specify whether that layer should be sterilized or pasturized as well. So is microwaving cool and what should I do to the bottom layer of verm?

Just use common sense and sterilize the bottom layer as well. Microwaving will work for sterilizing casing mix, load it in a tupperware with lid and stir halfway through heating cycle.

Don't worry about killing the nutrients. The point of a casing layer is not to provide nutrients. If a microwave cycle kills whatever small amount of nutrients can be found in a casing layer, then you're that much further ahead!

That is what I read in God's Big Blue Book (A.K.A. the Mushroom Cultivator). Although I don't subscribe to everything in this holy text... I did retain that little chunk of information and it has served me well.

As far as the microwave goes, is 5 minutes a bit excessive? My goldfish has used the microwave in the past to (try) and sterilize his casing mixes, but generally not for over a minute, stirring at the 30second mark. He doesn't have any contamination problems, but stirring with his fin is fun to watch. Should the mix be microwaved longer for good measure?

that wood is just large peices of peat, and straining would serve to break up clumps, that is the only advantage I see

It could very well be sticks. If I order my coco coir from a hydroponics place in huge 70 liter bricks, I get sticks in it..unlike the stuff from the pet store. I remove any I see but I dont sift it or anything...

i jus wanna go back and disagree with myself, the sticks prolly have nothing to do with nutes, and prolly everything to do with the consistancy of the casing layer (ya kno rather than having big and mall particales jus have all small particles)
