drying tek

Hey all.... I've had a little difficulty using a drying agent (like Damp-Rid et al) for perserving my shroomies in the past. Would those food dehyrators be a good option?... I know they use some heat (I think around 155-180 degrees). Would this considerably take away from the potency of the shroom? Thanks so much for your help!

How do you mean you have had trouble using Damp Rid? What kind of trouble?
Immediately upon harvesting, place the mushrooms in front of a standard room/floor fan for about 2 days - this will take out a very large % of the water content - then place in an airtight, sealed container with fresh, unused damp rid - they will be "cracker dry" as the saying goes within a couple days.
You want to use methods that you are sure will get them 100% dry if you are going to be preserving them for any time at all.

What happens if the babies are transferred immediately to the damp-rid tek and not fanned for 2 days? AFOAF of my cat is right at this stage and this is the first time he's hearing about drying w/ a room fan first. BTW, how do you keep them from blowing all over the place w/ the room fan tek?

When my friend tried to dry them immediately with DR without fanning first, he found that the damp rid tended to be "used up" much faster - i.e. it is absorbing a hell of a lot more moisture. The mushrooms get a strange shriveled, kind of limp texture and turn extremely blue. Overall my friend concluded that fanning for 2 days first then DR worked best.
About blowing all over the place - he puts a paper towel down, puts the mushrooms on it, secures it to the floor with a couple coat hangers, just turns the fan on its lowest or medium setting with something like a box or something behind it to act as a "backboard" - unless your fan is on really hard or the mushrooms are really damn light, they aren't going to fly off. You are the one who was born to fly.

I know a kid who goes from tank to drying chamber, sans the fan tek- Although its true they do get very blue, if cut us small enough, and a deep enough layer of damp rid is used, shrooms will be cracker dry between 3 - 5 days depending on how much product is being dried. (ie 100grms wet take 4 days)

cantara's right -- putting in front of a fan for 12-24 hours (depending on humidity in the house) and then go into desiccant. here's stage 1 of my dry-tek - shoebox at right angle with paper towel and screen to hold everything in place...

Reason: Well im glad you used the search engine you should really limit the age of posts you search to 3-4 years
You bumped a 15 year old thread these people are not even here anymore.
Fan drying is bootleg
Use a food dehydrator at 160-170 for 12+ hours or until when weighed an hour apart mushrooms haven't lost any weight. They can then be stored air tight for years.
Expect about 92-93% water content with cubensis 100 grams wet to 7-8 grams dry.
