Verm makes an ideal bottom casing layer; moisture retention + it withstands contams well. BUT in this case, since you're low on verm, I'd recommend skipping it all together. I do all verm bottom casing layer, or none at all. That's just my preference.

Yea you should really lay down a bottom layer, at least a 1/2" of verm if you have a tipical sized case. I even used a mixture of perlite and verm on my bottom layer when I ran short of verm. I've even read of people using just perlite across the bottom layer. Make sure it's moist too before you lay the substrate... just spray the verm until it *glistens* but no more!

As diver says. It isnt the difference between succes and failure but can give some extra moisture ti the dubstrate. Specially straw is hard to rehydrate after flushes.
Tomorrow will spawn to straw and will have verm mixed in the straw. Didnt think of bottom casinglayer yet, but will do that.

Thanks,
MF

IMO, skip it..never had the need to use one. Never had a problem rehydrating straw with a dunk either...

yes.. anything that comes in contact to your cakes or anything should be cleaned and sterlized. Better safe than sorry.
