Casing with peat moss

I just bought some high quality peat moss to use for casing, Im using this because of its porous texture and how much water it will hold. Does anyone else use peat moss, and if so is there anything specific I need to do with it to make it work like more lime or any additives.

get ahold of some calcium carbonate (crushed oyster shells, crushed egg shells(to a very fien almost powdery consistancy)) i personally am going to use calcium carbonate in the form of hermit crab sand. u can find it at pet stores and stuff. but egg shells are easy to get u jsu need a lot of them and id suggest pressure cooking them before using because the egg whites and yolk can harbor a lot of bacterial contaminants

go and get some dolomitic lime (garden lime) mix it in with your peat at a 25% ratio. strain your peat with mechanics mesh to get outall the lumps and the twigs. read the teks to find out what you need to do

Peat moss makes a better casing layer then coir, mix it 50/50 with verm and ph buffer as mentioned above, and you'll see great results. 1/4" casing layer also.

If they are STICKS or WOOD, they contain NUTRIENTS. Nutrients will be eaten by something, if you expose them to air, they'll likly be eaten by contams.

do a search! its not that good as peat, at all.
ow about the sticks and pieces of wood, take the *big* pieces out. A grower i know uses compost in the casing layer, which has much nutes in it. No contam problems.
Take the big chunky pieces out of the peat, PC/Microwave it well, fruit clean.
