Cold water pasteurization....
    #3891046 - 03/09/05 03:59 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with cold water pasteurization... It seems like an ideal method to pasteurize an enormous amount of straw at one time. I guess what I'm asking is have you tried it, and how does it work.... I just cant understand how it would... Does it drown endospores/bacteria? That seems like the only  way in my opinion, since the thermogenic organisms are anaerobic correct? I dunno, I'll quit babbling, but someone, please fill me in.... Thanks in advance... peace

P.s. It is thermogenic correct? Or is it thermophilic.....

Cold water immersion:
Fill a tub with clean, cold water. Prepare straw as for hot water, and completely immerse in the water for 5-7 days. The water should have a large surface area and have some opportunity to circulate by convection, to avoid anaerobic conditions. Use good quality straw. Supplementation prior to immersion is not recommended. At the end of the immersion period, remove the straw from the water, drain and spawn as usual

Yeah thanks... i've already read that in the mushroom cultivation section of this site... I'm asking for actual experience based information, and a description of exactly HOW this could pasteurize the straw.

Thats all good bro, i really do appreciate the effort.... I however have exactly that setup at the moment... I guess thats about the best way to go... I would however like someone to explain, or at least point me to an explanation, of how cold water pasteurization works exactly... Thanks for your input brother....

Maybe, this is a guess. It relies on any contam spores germinating and then literaly drowning in the aqueous environment. Maybe thats why it calls for surface area (gas exchange) and circulation (to prevent stagnation and thus anerobic activity). This is just a guess remember.

Once again, thank you for your replies.... and thanks mad for your guess, that is what i was sorta thinking...

Anno, thanks.... i've read that a few times, and it doesnt explain the direct action that causes pastuerization....

Well guys thanks for the replies, i guess mads guess as to the direct action is the closest im going to get to a solid answer.... Peace

Edit... I know the PROCESS of cold water pastuerization... I think i may be confusing people, but i dont know how to word it better than this.... What MAKES it work.... I mean pasteurization itself entails hot, or at least semi hot water.... so HOW does cold water kill off the endospores, while keeping the thermogenic organisms around? As MAD stated, it is possible, we suppose, that the water drowns the bad organisms... is that correct? what is the SCIENTIFIC explanation as to HOW it does this... .... I hope this clears up what i am trying to ask.... Thanks brothers

You are pretty much onto it.  When you immerse your substrate in water for 5-7 days, it kills off all the aerobic organisms.  So yes, they drown. It also provides the right oxygen free atmosphere for the anaerobic organisms to begin their life cycle. When you drain off the water at the end of the soak, all the anaerobic organisms that came to life will die from the oxygen like fish and your substrate will be purged of all competition to your planned mycelial infection.

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
It's bogus.  First of all it would be a stinking mess as anyone who has left straw in a bucket too long already knows.  Second, what good is soggy, slimy straw when the mushroom mycelium wants to break it down on the cellular level?  Just use heat and get it over in 2 hours, so you can move on.
