wait for dry vermiculite to colonize
    #3888748 - 03/08/05 07:53 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

my entire jar is colonized where there is the mixture of vermilculite and brf. but not really on the top 1" layer where I put on dry vermiculite for air contamination protection. its very minorly colonnized in that area. very little make sure you understand this. so what should i do? the rest of the jar has been colonized and nice thick white lovingness for a few days now. so what should i do? will that top layer ever colonize?

the top layer wont colonize it has no nutrients to do so so jus birth the cakes now if they r fully colonized

The dry verm layer isnt supposed to colonize, its ok if it does...but theres no nutrition.

I wondered the same thing when i started growing shrooms. Theres no nutrients (brf) for the mycelium to colonize on, so just scrape off all the dry vermiculite out and start casing.

I get shrooms growing out of the top verm. layer almost all of the time, somtimes during the first flush somtimes during the second flush. It all depends which side up I birth first. All I do is just dump off the loose verm. and leave what stays on the cake, [no scraping] which is usually clonized. Then I dunk the cakes for 24/h max. Mabey the pins that appear on the verm. layer is caused from the moisture from when I dunk my cakes, causing it to act like caseing, somewhat.
