You HAVE to have a buffer. Long term and short term is best.

It may work without it, but you'll probably be disapointed if your looking for any sort of nice flushes.

Coir on the other hand doesnt HAVE to have the calc carb. It helps though.

Powdered eggshells, oyster shells, chalk, limestone (not like you write on the board) are all forms of long term buffer. Hydrated lime is a short term, quick acting buffer. Just the calc carb in your WBS wont help the peat moss much (helps overall though).

Can pickling lime be used as the buffer? From what I have read, it is slightly stronger than hydrated lime. Any reccomendations on quantities used for pickling lime. I can get pickling lime at all the local grocery stores. I also plan on getting some calcium carbonate at garden store, but was wondering about the pickling lime.

Hydrated lime is already so strong that it must be used carfully. If it is stronger, it would be even more difficult. You can use it but you can only use short term buffers if you have a way to measure the pH, it would be easy to add to much since peat moss acidity can vary. There are basic measurments for hydrated lime, but I dont think anyone would know the correct ratio using pickling lime. Assuming it could even be used..I dont know exactly what it is but maybe.

Of course it would still require the long term buffer either way..

you can purchase garden lime and that works great. i mix it with 4.5 parts peat 1 part garden lime 1 part vermiculite. mix it up in a dry state. saturate it with water. and squeeze the excess water out.

Ive been looking for Dolamite Lime (nutes for plants). That is however only a long term buffer and short term may help a bit too.

Like I just said on another post though, you can get away with just a short term buffer.

What about Calicum Carbonate tablets? Could they work as a buffer? If so, would it be considered a short-term or long-term buffer? The reason why I ask, is because I've noticed calicum carb. tablets are readly avabily at pharmacies, [O.T.C] and at many helh supplemnt stores.
If this stuff works wouldn't it make more sense to get easy-to-crush tabs, rather than working hard grinding up hard oyster shells?
Also what about calicum rocks? Mabey grind up calicum rocks into a chalk.
I'm just thinking of alternitive ideas for buffers, so please dont flame.

Ialso have two heavely clonized B+ quart rye grain jars. I want to case the contents of one jar, which is why I too want info on buffers, but, the above metioned ideas were asked about because the stuff is more readily available for me.

Thanks

Shroomguy do what my friend did. Go to the grocery store. Buy 1 dozen eggs (approx 99cents or less). Eat or otherwise dispose of egg, keep shells. Make sure you rinse off the inner membrane and crush/grind into powder. I believe a good ratio is 1 Tbsp to 1 Qt casing mix.

I believe Jiffy Mix has lime in it. Its about $3 for an 8-quart bag *at home depot*. If you did this you could leave out the coir and maybe add a little verm if you want.
