Breathing effect of Tyvek
    #3888413 - 03/08/05 06:44 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

You ever notice that when a tyvek sealed grain jar infects the tyvek puffs up from the rapid production of gasses.

Also, this is why i wont use tyvek any more. when you puncture it and pull the needle out it creates a small vacuum that can suck unfiltered air back in.

tyvek is pointless when making jars imo. i get great results not even bothering with it. just a layer of tinfoil over the holes in the lid and a layer of tinfoil over the first layer of tinfoil after inoculation and you're rolling.

It is not supposed to make your shit breath, it is supposed to allow gas exchange of grain jars without letting contaminants in, and it does so splendidly.

If you have shit breath, tic tacks will help...

Today...I believe he was talking of grain jars, not the PF Tek.

im not talking about the gas going through the tyvek, im talking about the up/down motion of the tyvek. Its like a little set of lungs for your jar.

I never noticed those lungs in my jars.

Putting it on tightly and using large squares instead of circles helps get it all under the threads and seal it on well so when you pull the needle out, the tyvek stays taught and doesnt come up a little, has no slack.

I suppose it would matter if we were all growing contams  I myself keep incubating jars in a clean enclosed container and sometimes I just crack the lids slightly to allow for gas exchange with a 0% contam rate with no tyvek. Contams can proliferate extremely quickly apparently faster than tyvek can release their gases. Good observation tahoe.

I still keep my record of 0% contamination in 8 months and all i use is johnson & johnson breathable cloth tape over the holes in my jars. tyvek is a great invention IMHO. it isn't really paper like at all though. it has all these really really tiny holes in it. i use it for the CO2 hole in my BIG casings tubs.

One of the best things I've found since i've came back to the hobby is Tyvek. Works like a champ. Does what it's ment to do. And best of all.....it's free!

wally world wbs. Im thikning of useing it as spawn but i dont kow yet. Whats awesome is that this is a clone from a fungi perfecti kit and fp has acclimated the species to a wood lover. They recomend an alder/bran mixture for fruiting

Have you fruited on it (WBS) yet? As a spawn it looks very healthy.

i think the flash added alot of the white, it stinks and is producin gas at a high rate. Enough for it to push the tyvek up. I havent fruited it on grain yet. I have it on agar and i am soaking some alder right now so i might brew it up wood since this jar contamed

Perhaps you shouldn't use a double layer if your tyvek already comes pretty thick.

the breathing is lessened with a double layer used for syringe inoculations, but i guess it would clog up the gas exchange
