unintentional casing

I have to say, knowing that I grew the mushrooms I tripped on last night made my trip SO much cooler :)

Anyway, I had decided to do cakes first, and if I could get them to grow, then try casings. So I had three cakes in my terrarium on jar lids, and two of them started growing mushrooms, only two or three per cake, but hey, SHROOMS :). The third cake showed no sign of growth, so as an experiment I took away the jar lid and put the cake directly on the perlite. Still nothing, for a week. meanwhile, the other cakes now had two or three almost mature mushrooms. Frustrated, I decided to pull the obstinate cake out, and when I picked it up I found that it had grown down into the perlite. I put it back upside down, the perlite sticking to it like a casing, and in three days had an army of pins. Well, at least a battalion. Ok, maybe a barbershop quartet :) But seriously, my little underacheiver cake has now trebled the yeild of the other two "regular" ones. And that's my newbie anecdote for today . . .

Maybe the other cakes need more water and could use sitting directly on the perlite as well..
