Grad School?
    #3887778 - 03/08/05 04:36 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Well...sure enough...life is steadily passing by, and the time has come for me to start thinking about whether or not i want to go to grad school

to be honest, i havent really enjoyed the undergraduate college experience. I mean, i really love what i'm learning (most of the time), but it's so much endless stressful work all the time. I'm tired of non-stop school constantly. I miss having a social life, getting high, and not being stressed out all day everyday.

But it seems like everybody else in my major is definitely heading to grad school. More schooling does seem to have some good aspects to it. I would definitely like to learn a lot more. And it would be nice to make more money i guess. But really im not sure if its worth it. Really...i just dont know...i need some input from you guys

For the people who went to grad school, was it worth it? why or why not? what did you think of the experience?

For those of you who went to undergrad but didn't go onto grad school, do you regret it? Why or why not?

thanks

I have had my Bachelors Degree for the past two years and I haven't really done anything besides finishing up a Part time tech support job with the county, collecting unemployment and then working at a Pub since I got payed hourly wages and Tips on top of that; which added up to about a $30 an hour wage believe it or not with the tips. I have spent the past three months recovering from cracking my C3 and C7 Vertabrae in My neck, wearing a neck collar. During this time I have been doing much thinking and `em considering going back to skewl for an MBA. I figure I have really nothing else to do right now here in this town, it wouldn't be that difficult for me to get into the MBA program here. Its just I hate writing papers for skewl; no Im not talking about easy 10 or 15 page papers each week. Im talking about the big 50+ page papers the professors want you to write. Also in the MBA programs 99% of the time you will be doing skewl work with groups of people, thus you have to rely on someone other than yourself to do skewl work that will have an affect on your grade. Granted when you are in an MBA program most people there have THEIR SHIT TOGETHER. That isn't really the case however when you are trying to get a Bachelors.

I never felt as much anxiety in my entire life until I had to write big MidTerm and Finals in my Senior Classes, MIS and Business. Seriously, I could have used some medication during those times. If I went back to skewl I would for sure have to seek treatment for my ailments.

if you've got the money, go to gradschool.

do me a favor and quit bitching about your non-stop school, cuz
the only thing your ass has to look forward to after school is a
a career with non-stop work.

go to grad school, start your career and you may wind up making
enough dough to enjoy some semblance of social life later down
the road when you're sitting on a pension and a savings account.

kids...complaining about school....sheesh!

I know people who went to grad school. They said that the first two years of the undergraduate bachelor experience was a 4(on a 1 to 10 scale) in difficulty. The last two years were a 6. They then said that grad school is a 9.

You think college is stressful? Wait until you get out into the work world.

Yes just keep it up, I am going to go back to Vocational school here sometime, but I can't afford it right now. I am going to get my G.E.D. as well...I am a pretty smart person, but I didn't take school seriously when I was younger. BTW I am 33...

well what kinda undergrad degrees did they have?

One was a geography major. The other was an electrical engineering major. They stuck with their respective majors both in undergraduate school and later in graduate school.

Yeah man..if you DON'T get a MS in Biochem then you have failed. There is -nothing- that will explode faster than any sort of medical/bio science. You will be set-for-life, hands down. Just do it. You said you like Bio, and I hope you do if you majored in Chem/Bio chem.

That's intense stuff, and you haven't come ALL this way just to stop. Just keep going.

It's better than leaving. If you think about it you probably only put less than or equal hours per day into school as you do for work, and even then that's alot of fucking hours. I don't put CLOSE to a workday's worth of hours into school. Not ever.

I sometimes wish I had continued my college education (I only did one year). But then I think about it and I realise that I'm happy where I'm at. I have a good job that pays well. I worked many long, hard years to get to where I am but I don't think the education would have changed that. You will always have to work hard to excel at any career. For me the education would have made no difference in my choice of career paths and the only real way to get to where I am is experience. Its not the kind of work that can be taught in school.

But if you have a keen interest in a field that requires your continued education then I say buckle down and do it. I think you will be glad later that you put in the effort now.

Another poster made a great point.

Bio and BioChem is about to really fucking explode.

bio-nanotech is going to be insane.

they are saying that the next chips and transistors
will actually be based on biological structures instead
of artificial or manufactured components.

another way to look at it is this...

you've come this far and developed some skills, if you
leave now, you may be able to get a job in your field,
but you probably won't excell or earn as much as if
you had gotten that masters or phd.

further, if you don't go into your field, you're only other
options seem to be teaching or going underground and
synthesizing 2cs for drugkids.

Stick it out, go for the golden ring, because this is a field
that is going to explode and you may be in a position to
ride that bubble upwards just like CS majors were in
the 90s.

Just a thought.
