how long are cakes good for?

alright well i had made quite a few jars and used up some old syringes i had, only half the jars germinated, they are at about 50 percent now. my question is, if i made the jars over 3 weeks ago but they still show no contam, can i reinnoculate with new spores are hope for germination or will this not work. thanks and please reply with any comments or suggestions.PLUR
