straw log question (pics, are they fully colonized?)
    #3887384 - 03/08/05 03:16 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

hey, this is my boogers first shot at using straw in the form of LOGS. it took colonized rye, tazmanian and BHT and made two logs with em. each is about a foot long and about 5-7 inches in diameter. it doesnt know if these are fully colonized yet, but they might be, what do you guys think?

tazmania

BHT

this is day 10 for both of the logs, each one has about a qt. of colonized rye in them. these pictures are a few days old so, so the logs look a little whiter now but not too much. what do you think? almost time to fruit?

I'd give them a few more days.

It is pointless to fruit it as fast as you can. You may be able to get shrooms faster if you leave it in the incubator and let the inside colonize, just like with cakes its not gonna fruit worth a damn unless you let the inside colonize.

well i imagine if the outside is colonized the inside will be too, considering all the spawn was mixed so its mostly inside the log to begin with.  plus i dont use an incubator for logs, i dont think youre really supposed to move them much because of their size which makes them suseptable to bruising :frown:

its okay tho, at 13 days theyre almost done without an incubator

Have you been exposing these logs to light since day one?
If you expose them to light from day one, they shoul be colonized and starting to pin in about 2 weeks or so. At that time you would birth the logs.

yes theyve been being exposed to light off and on via a closet door. thats not a bad idea, i should wait for signs of pinning and then birth it.

i was just under the impression that if i birthed it and exposed the mycellium to open air for about 2-3 seconds everyday by folding back the plastic and then placing it back it would cause lots of pinning, but your way seems safer.
