Why'd this happen to my casing?
    #3886604 - 03/08/05 11:40 AM (12 years, 19 days ago)

The first flush of my casing just finished, and I'm not disappointed with the results, but they are by no means the best I've seen. I used a tray that was approx 16"x12"x1.5" and started out with a 1/2 inch layer of verm, followed by a layer of 4 crumbled 1/2 pint jars, covered in a layer of peat moss with some verm mixed in. My pin set never formed as densely as ones Ive seen on other peoples grows, and I was wondering what causes this to happen? Is it possible I didn't evenly spread the peat on the top? Any suggestions? I think I'm going to re case it today so any help would be great.

Maybe you should try casing with some kinda if substrate mixed in like sraw/poo or just straw that way the myc and shrooms has something to eat on. Nore nutrients will give you bigger fruits and more of them.

They seel straw at my local pet store. And also if you have any kind of feed store near you they will deff have it. The poo you can pick up at Lowes, even though some ppl say that Black Kow compost manure isn't the best, it is better than nothing i think. It's what i use.

It's hard to say why the pinset wasn't great, could be a number of things.  Like, not enough air exchange, improper humidity, too dry, too wet, too hot, too cold, uneven surface.. etc.  But hey, if you got a crop that's a great start!  And BTW, I think you meant "patched" and not "overlayed"- overlay is what happens when the surface mycelium becomes hard and thick.  Although if you DID allow that to happen, that would also explain the sparse pinset..

yeah i meant patched...i was fanning probably 5-6 times a day throughout the whole day. i think I'm gonna make a trip to Lowes and check that out. Does the poo from Lowe's need to be sterilized?

You did not mention a buffer. Peat moss is highly acidic, poor for mushroom growth and requires a buffer for better then crap results..

Poo from lowes needs to be pasteurized..however poo and compost found in stores is generally to old to be very good for mushroom growing..
