How to find a place to live in LA?
    #3886467 - 03/08/05 10:43 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

2 of my friends are moving to LA for 6 months for internship at the UCLA and they have trouble finding a place to stay at. Does anyone have suggestions where they could look to find something? I think they prefer a appartment for 2 persons that isn't too expensive and not too far from the UCLA.
Any websites they can look on to find something?

Maybe someone want to rent their place or has something for rent?
they're both quiet and friendly people(21 and 22 yo). they need it from april-august.

rent.com, an ebay company

There are a lot of online sources, really; however, craigslist is a great source began in California (Bay Area) now they have other places.

Classifieds in local newspapers will help, too (many many many newspapers in LA have online classifieds).

if their gonna be goin to UCLA check out Gayley St. right off of I think Sunset Blvd, theres frats, sororitys, and apartments up the ass, but their gonna be paying at least 1200-1600 a month rent not including utilities, If I were them Id look for apartments in Valencia, its about a 20 minute commute but youll save yourselves like 600 bucks a month in rent.

that's fucking expensive! isn't there a student ghetto there or similar? i pay $350 a month and it includes utilties, cable and internet. it's dorm style though 4/4 with common place but i have my own bathroom and closet. we have a washer and dryer and balcony too. some of my friends live in a 2 bedroom duplex in the student ghetto right by the sororitys for $400 including everything.

How much money are the willing to spend?

If they think they might find some place near UCLA for not that much, they have another thing coming! They may have to find a place to live that might be up to 20+ miles away from UCLA inorder to be able to afford it.

expect to pay about 1500 a month even in not so good parts, if you look in Valencia though you can find some nice ass 2 bedrooms for like 800-900 without utilities.

I think 'affordable' and 'near UCLA' are mutually exclusive unless
you go down to culver city, mar vista, venice areas, for example.

craigslist is definitely a good place to start.

check out the LA muni maps too, just to get any idea of what
train and buslines might be available to you for commuting to
the campus.

my wife and I might be in need of a roommate, but we're probably
a little more south than you'd want to be near Manhattan Beach.

Good call on craigslist, lots of listings there.  If your friends are already in the area, pick up a Pennysaver magazine which puts out a classified listing every week or two.  Most local papers also have classified ads as well... but craigslist is probably the easiest.  If they don't mind living tight, they could choose many areas outside of central and west los angeles that offer small rooms and such (often times attached to a main house on a larger property but still private in and of iteself), for anywhere from $550 (verrrry small) all the way up to many thousands.  Pasadena comes to mind, as my parents just rented out one of a combo one-room/kitchen/bath unit for $550 a month, as well as a larger one bedroom, living room, seperate kitchen and bath unit for $800/month.  There are deals out there, but they do go fast.  Take your time and good luck!  .. and pay attention to the area you're lookin' at, as there is much cheap property in south/southeast/east los angeles, but it would likely not be an area they would like to live in!

Definitely keep in mind traffic as well, since it can get downright brutal here

if worse comes to worse and they have access to a car for that time, they can probably check out the san fernando valley for some cheap accommodation..especially ghetto areas like pacoima, van nuys, north hollywood, etc which are accessible to UCLA via the freeway. it'll also be something to talk about to friends back in nl!

I can't believe you and geo would suggest the valley or
pasadena for someone going to UCLA.

that's just fucking cruel.

has it been that long since you've had to sit in bumper
to bumper on the sepulveda pass or do you both just
have no  empathy anymore?!

:smirk:

I think they'll do a lot of emailing today

They they won't have a car so they can't live too far from the UCLA. I saw that Craigslist has plenty of interesting offers for sublets etc so they must be able to find something

Sure thing, I thought that would do it.

there's not much reason to pay for those pay services
anymore now that there's craigslist.

it's gotten more and more popular, but there is definitely
a different class of person that uses the site for commerce.
