Best (non bulk) use of 27 quarts of rye?
    #3885867 - 03/08/05 04:10 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

What is a good way to use 27 colonized quarts of rye, aside from spawning to straw/poo and going bulk? A plan of action has to be started next week...

Two 50/50 casings with 13 quarts each? confidence and ability is high with great success with casings in the recent past to make large ones cake (pun intended).

Taking a step down the growing ladder, how would 27 cakes in their cake form compare to two large casings, just spread out in the tubs growing right off the cakes...

Any thoughts? Room for the grow is tight at the moment, which is the reason for not spawning to several bales of straw. Capacities include extra tall 36gal tub, and two 90Q sterlite tubs (longer and shorter in height).

The decision is leaning toward two 13q casings.

thoughts are appreciated.

Casings sounds like the way to go dot dot dot

And most growers get more off of casings than cakes, But i've seen some people (sam1912, do a search) put casings to shame (except for agars lol)...But i'd lean towards casings, i'm pretty sure that casings would most likely yield you more...And since you have so many, you may want to try out different kinds of casing mixes, might find out something that works great for ya...
I've heard that peat/verm./lime works wonders,

Good luck, sounds exciting

50/50+ was what was done with 6 current casings. Working great. Might as well continue 50/50+, coir was not findable at the local pet shops when it came time to do the current 6 casings, and a 10lb bag of oyster shell ag lime is already at hand... That's going to be alot of verm and peat, though

Lol, yea agreed.

But you may yield more...or less :frown:
But damn, you've got the perfect set-up for experimenting
Sounds like you're gonna be having lots of fun, watch-out for contams tho, it'd suck to have to watch that shit spread, i've had green mold before and that shit is fucking relentless =/

Good luck tho, sounds like bunches of fun

What kind of set-up will you be doing for so many casings if you don't mind my asking?

The question was asking for ideas on how to use the 27 quarts, given the circumstances above. As for setup for so many casings, who decided on so many casings  :3rd_eye: The thought of doing two 13q casings is being pondered, simple couple inches of perlite, then 50/50+ casing mix.

WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to much rye per casing. You want to put 13 quarts of rye in a casing? Damn man lol.

Do 4 containers this size (7 quarts of rye in this, not bulk)

Or if youve got the room, put 2 quarts per container in containers like this:

The second option will yeild you more, but the first option will take up less space. Of course the first option should yield you 3 flushes of a half pound each total (2 ounces per container) so even thats not so bad. Each 2 quart container should yeild you more like 100 grams over 3 flushes so 14 containers...1400 grams, just over 3 pounds instead of the pound and a half. Surface area is better then depth... (over inch and a half anyway..)

I will have 24 quarts of colonized wbs next week and am facing a similar dilemma. I am still sorta new to the hobby, so I got a couple questions. By non bulk, do you mean you just put the colonized rye(wbs for me) in your container, after it is broken up a bit? Then level it out and case?

Yes. That would be non bulk. Bulk would be laying out the colonized WBS in layers with layers of poo/compost/straw, and then once thats colonized casing. It expands your substrate alot, but it isnt always needed. I grew with straight rye for a while up until recently and got as you see above.

I would assume you fruit as soon as you case? Since all the rye/wbs is already colonized?

Well, you shoud incubate a casing after you case it for 2-4 days until a little mycelium starts poping up, then patch mist and fruit. Personally though, I fruit right after casing because my chamber runs about 75-82 degrees, a bit warm and almost incubating. I do wait about 3 days before turning on the light though to let the myc get to the surface.

You can let it colonize for a day or so before going to fruiting temps, seems to help, but either way is fine.
