Why Use Holes?
    #3885249 - 03/08/05 01:15 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Well, we knocked up 8 PF jars about 5 days ago, and we are seeing significant growth on all of them! Sucky thing is, 3 of them have small spots of green mold contam. We may or may not put these guys on the operating table. Now on to my question.

We had a pretty hard time getting the syringe needle all the way down through the dry vermiculite, into the wet substrate, and onto the sides of the jars to inject spores. On our next grow we were going to consider removing the lids in a dust free, Lysol'ed room to inoculate. It seems kind of pointless to inoculate through small holes when you could just remove the lids and get things done faster and easier. Anyone see problems with this idea?

Because I'm a supernoob and have not yet moved on to making my own syringes. We just used the syringe provided by ET.

you can take the lids off (the part with the rubber seal) and keep using the rings, all you would have to do is place a coffee filter or tyvek under the rings instead. then just stick the needle through the filter/tyvek, and cover the holes with bandaids or tape. this is great because then you also have extreme air exchange without moisture being lost, which basically means faster colonization. you can get tyvek at office suppy stores like Staples, just look for envelopes that say theyre made with tyvek.

dont risk taking the lids off completely without having a glove box or flow hood.

Hmm, good idea Edge. Could I PC with the tyvek on or is it not resistant to heat? *Makes a quick drive down to Staples*

"dont risk taking the lids off completely without having a glove box or flow hood."

I second that!

What was so hard about getting the needle in there? Were your holes big enough?

Nah the holes were fine...the needle just wasn't long enough.  It was hard to tell if the spores were even getting past the dry vermiculite barrier.  (Looking at the myc. it is obvious now that we did  ).

yeah tyvek works in pc's. when you get the envelopes you can cut out circles about the size of the rings, but make the circles a bit bigger so the tyvek folds over the lip and threads of the jar a little bit. then just put the ring on and pc, then inoculate and cover the holes.

be careful not to burn your brf when pcing though, dont go over 40-45 minutes @15psi.

no problem bud, good luck. you can write on the tyvek very easily too, which is another plus to its use.

As long as the water you squirt flows past the vermiculite, it will carry spores with it. You just don't want that water carrying contams with it.

Here's a tip I'm surprised I haven't seen on here before. Tyvek, if you purchase it can be an added expense, go to the Post Office, they have the Tyvek envelopes out in the lobby, grab as many as you need. I got about 20 large one's. Good Luck. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick.

Coffee filters are a very bad choice, plenty of breathability but it's not a micron filter, tyvek alone will allow the substrate to dry out, the best option
is to get a 1.5 inch needle in 18 ot 21 guage.
