No power exchange?
    #3884879 - 03/07/05 11:41 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Is there a way to auto air exchange without using a plug for a pump or somesort? I have these high shelves in my room with no electrical outlets around any of them. My friends and family visit alot and i would like to keep my cultivation process more private. Anyone?
thanks

You would need a taller container, but placing matching air holes at top and bottom, temperature differences will create air flow. But if your fruiting more tha 4 cakes at a time, you would need energy driving it.

Poly Fill + manual fanning is all you need.

It's a polyester fiberfill that has the perfect consistency for gas exchange. You drill holes and stuff it in. Also used in grain lids. You can get a 20 oz bag at Walmart for $3.

No not really, there is no real set placement or specific tek. You just drill holes and fill it. Experiment around and find what works best for your exact setup. I like to drill approx. 1/2"-1" size holes.

Some would say that you want to put them at casing level to drain some excess C02, yes. But I haven't noticed much of a difference from placing them on top of the lid or drilling holes even with the casing layer.

Here's another thought. I don't know if this would work, but it couldn't hurt to try. Mushroom growth produces heat - not much, but a little. And that (slightly) warmer air is going to try to rise. If you could get that flow going up through a tube, it would pull the air behind it and start a continuous flow. That's how a chimney works. Even a low rate of flow would exchange a lot of gas over a day's time. Here's a quick sketch to show what I mean.

You'd have to filter the intakes, and probably the egress as well, to prevent contamination. The big drawback would be humidity loss. Maybe some type of TiT configuration with a lot of water in the outer tub...
