I've had viable syringes after 2 years stored in a shed, it hot and cold...
in ideal conditions they can last years, the 6mos is a good guidline for
optimum viability

Aren't spores one of the hardiest storage units for passing on genetic information? I mean, they're meant to last a long, long time and then germinate when conditions are right, yeah?
