Tampanensis, Stamets, Mexicana -what does it mean???
    #3884169 - 03/07/05 09:21 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

What does it mean?

Labeled: "Psilocybe tampanensis sclerotia on rye grass seed"

And -egami esrever eht-
"Sclerotia of Teonancactl, Psilocybe mexicana"

Why?

I was going to attempt to contact him directly, but never got around to it... Besides, he probably wouldn't answer anyway...

I mean sure, we all occasionally mislabel (at least I have), but why reverse the image?

The sclerotia of both look near identicle so maybe he was just saving some efffort by tinkering with one good shot of Ps. sclerotia. By looking one cannot say if they are mexicana or tampanensis since no fruit bodies are displayed. I would guess he only had one good shot of sclerotic Ps. so he used it...twice.

My copy of "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Stamets and Chilton has both images labeled Psilocybe tampanensis sclerotia and the black and white image is not reversed.

The color image looks like it came from "The Mushroom Cultivator" as I can see parts of the other images on the same page and they match my copy. But the black and white image, besides being reversed, appears to have a second image to the right. My copy has only a single image on the page. What is the source of your black and white image? Perhaps in is an earlier (or later) printing or another book altogether.

I checked that out and that is the case. It is also on page 66 of GGMM 1st edition with the same error.

I remember when I first got GGMM 1st edition and how many errors there were. Such as the transposition of two images on page 198. Just poor editing I guess.

there are several doctored photos in that book... look really closely at some of the ones with people in them, you'll see that some heads of people were replaced with other heads...

hmmmm...

It was just something I noticed while looking through the books. Probably just an editing error like you said, I like whiterasta's idea as well.

I just go through life thinking that everything has a reason behind it. This often leads to many crazy hypotheses and conspiracy theories...

How similar are the two microscopically?
(we finally got the flow hood - that (microscope) will be the next step.)

I haven't noticed any head replacements but I did notice that all photos of Paul's now ex-wife were expunged between the 1st edition and the third of GGMM.
