One thing I have noticed about rappers...
    #3881264 - 03/07/05 04:07 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

They say how they're all "hard", yet they have bodyguards usually. Also, they brag about how they are from the 'hood and how they love the ghetto, yet the second they get money they move to Beverly Hills.

Yay for gangsta rap.

Hip Hop > Rap

Hip Hop is more about the music than the image.

I don't think any of them say they love the ghetto, they just acknowledge where they came from and respect it for making them what they are. Most rappers try to get out of the ghetto, and if they do then its a huge success, its not dishonorable to move out, it is respectable since they did so much from so little.

Some rappers are fucking "hard" - young buck stabbed some guy who punched Dr Dre in the face, The Game was shot up and was in a coma for a year before getting big, 50 cent got shot in the face, Snoop was on trial for murder. Having a crew or bodyguards does not mean you are a weakling or wuss, you simply acknowledge that there are security risks that a single person can not take care of.

There are inconsistancies in ALL music genres, I don't think this is that weird or exceptional at all.

Captain,

Does that mean if I want to sell records, I should just get "shot up" or stabbed to increase my market share?:tongue:

Generally, I cannot stand rappers and their stupid lyrics, etc.......

In short, yes.

If you were to be shot up or stabbed it would serve to increase your "street credibility" among the targeted segment of the population. In this case, urban areas or people who live in the "ghetto" would be more likely to see you are being a true representative of the "hood" and would thus feel more comfortable listening to your music since they think they can identify with you.

They won't be embarassed if they decide to blast your beats from their lowed-out caddy or thugged up impala if you are a true "gangsta."

He's right - really good hip hop is so fucking good...there's a great article in the village voice: The Game - it's a really cynical article about the mainstream marketing of (c)rap music.

But there is awesome hip hope out there like Black Star, MF Doom, Eyedea & Abilities, etc. Not to mention all th awesome old school stuff.

I don't mind the music, but come on, black people just take way out of proportion. I got jumped by a bunch of black guys that kept saying "We da D-block nigga" "one of us fights, we all fight, that's how we roll" WTF DUMBASSES? it was lame to hear that in a fight. I was very dissapointed to hear such slander

I dont like how they rap about all the bling and the ho's and passing around sluts, and selling heron and crack. Killing others to survive aint my idea of how to do it. You are doing some thing wrong if you do it that way. There are much more posetive ways to get on top and do well.

There are a lot of good hip-hoppers who rap about things much more important than all that, you just have to find them. Suggestions:

Sage Francis
Saul Williams
MF Doom
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Black Star - which is Mos Def and Talib Kweli together
Outkast
Atmosphere

and of course

Jurassic 5!

The best rappers, in my opinion, are poets who rap in a way that is playing with language in a way that says something important about the world we live in, and all of the above do that.

I'm not a huge fan of rap, love hip hop but cant dig the cats out there singing about money and cars while perpetuating the problem of black men not feeling worthy enough to their peers. i understand the struggle faced trying to get out of the hood but gloating about it doesn't seem like a good way to celebrate.

That's why all the big corporations jump all over supporting these guys and putting plugs in their videos and what not..

I mean, just imagine some kid watching all these fast jump-cut videos (the shittiest, cheapest editing tricks around) with some hypnotic beat (let's face it, they get some cool beats sometimes) listening to someone sing about buying buying buying while being deluged with images of all the things they could buy...

It's a fat cat's wet fucking dream.
