I'm looking for music with good female vocals. i love me some soft sensual voices every now and then. music i'm looking for is along the lines of Takako Minekawa, Azure Ray, The chick from Belle & Sebastian, Mazzy Star, The Skirts, even Gwen Stefani. Not really interested in Brittany Spears or Barbra Streisand types. I've heard some Bjork and it sounded like an alien voice, i like soothing organic female vocals mostly, not electronic robotic stuff. some angry chick music is ok. Any recommendations? thanks

check out Lisa Gerrard's work with Dead Can Dance on "Toward the within" and "Spiritchaser"
Perfume Tree's "Feeler" is lush female vox over downtempo and breakbeat.
theres a female trip-hop compilation called "She" that's pretty good.
Lamb is kind of poppy but has great production. (fem vox)
Mum has an amazing (french?) female focalist over nu-tronic beats.
oh, and do i need to mention Bjork?

I always thought Sinead O'Connor had a really bitchin voice. Some of the stuff on The Lion and the Cobra album is really strong. Listen to the song 'Troy' off of that album. She can really belt out a note!
And Enya can be soothing.

Cat Power is one you MUST hear, also Hem, Ani Di Franco, and most definitely Yo La Tengo.

look into Rasputina
it's sort of rockish music with cello ( sometimes distorted ) as the main instrument
for soothing things their covers seem to be really good, Bad Moon Rising, Rock n Roll, and Brand New Key
also some of their own stuff is good for soothing stuff like Tourniquet, Transylvanian Concubine, When I was a young girl
Hell, most of their stuff come to think of it
