Okay so look at this... very neat.
    #3876476 - 03/06/05 08:40 AM (19 years, 27 days ago)

I found this in a jar that I had thrown out. (Thrown out means I put it on the back porch and forgot about it)

When I had thrown it out, all the grain in the jar was as black as coal. I had known that the syringe I was using was infected with something, so I shot the whole thing into one jar just to see what would happen. Bored I guess... anyway, of course it contamed and of course I thought it was a lost cause. Four weeks after throwing it out I discovered these suckers growing in there. (Sorry the picture quality is so poor. I had to borrow a camera and it's a seven year old piece of shit)

The big one in the top of the jar is actually curled around on itself like a question mark. Unwound it came out to nearly seven inches long.

Culturing on agar has verified that the contaminant in question is indeed aspergillus niger and not a bacteria (as I had thought). Out of the six plates I made, it looks like only one might be good enough to isolate. This aspergillus strain is a quick fucker...

haha, i've encountered the same thing. Some old jars that contamed that i didnt feel like cleaning out had been sitting at the bottom of an old box. When i finally went in to clean shit out *Surprise*, a bunch of invitro mushies chillin out. Problem is I remember why I threw the jars out in the first place. The tyvek melted to the lids and I couldn't unscrew the top .

What's that on the bottom??  It's red and green and grey!  EW EW EW EW EW!!

Remember Fucknuckle!!  I'm too lazy to dig up a link, but his thread is sticky in the Physical and Mental Well-Being forum
Title:  MYCOTOXICOSIS!!
Kind of explains it all, doesnt it?
:puke:

edit:  This might be a caffeine-fueled overreaction.  Hope you didn't eat that!

Green mold (trich) is edible and relatively harmful, different story with the black stuff (Aspergillus).

Actually reading into it a little bit it seems I misposted earlier. Aspergillus Niger does not produce aflatoxin. That would be A. Flavus and A. Parasiticus.

It does produce Oxalic Acid and Viomellein. Which means when ingested, best case scenario you get a tummy ache, worst case scenario your liver and kidneys stop working.

Inhaled, it can cause sinus and pulmonary infections. It's also known to cause skin and ear infections as well. It's also a big time allergen. Something like 50% of the population is allergic to it.

Not as nasty as a. flavus, but still a bad one.
