colinization status

A FOAF has innoculated with spore syringe 4 rye quart jars and 8 1/2pint jars (alien tek substrate). All have micron magic filter tops. The jars are incubating in slightly heated water bath container insided of a lager 25 gallon tuperware container.

They have been incubating for 6 days. He shook the quart jars after the 4th day. The quart jars have nicely distributed "fuzzy" growth. The 1/2 pints have much denser growth radiating from the 2 innoculation points. At this time, 6 days in the 1/2 pint colonies cover about 25% of the observable surface.
He is wondering if this is normal rate, or whether he needs to take some action. Specifically, he is a bit concerned that the 1/2pints might be too dry. He had some concerns when mixing the substrate that it was too dry (due to water vapor lost during preparation) , so he added some water, then added some verm (back and forth) until it looked about right. He might have overdone the verm. Anyway, when does one decide that the jar needs more water? Is it better to add water through original innoculation holes (and risk introducing contams) or be patient and let colonies grow at their own rate?

I'd say you're right on schedule. Slowdown, don't fix it if it aint broke.

your mushrooms could be thought of as really really sexy girls. i don't know if it applies to you, but they generally don't like to be bothered by the likes of me. perhaps that is why i have time to be on this board. in fact, they don't allways appriciate even being looked at by me. tempting as it may be, back off and let them do their thing, and they will eventually warm up to you when they are ready. now not figurtivly speaking, the more you mess with them the more likely you are to contaminate them. monitor their progress day to day, but hands off.
