Extortion
    #3877088 - 03/06/05 02:05 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

When everything has been exploited, there exists only one way to create wealth in a country that is already wealthy: extortion.

It can go from the merchant who lies by affirming: "This is the last item i have for sell, and if you don't buy it right now, i have another client who is interested", to the highest level, the government, who says: "Without the oil that pollutes, we wouldn't be able to bring heat to the population this winter".

This is how the fear of lacking or the fear of missing out on an affair generates artificial spendings.

Well those spendings are not really artificial because that is the price people are willing to pay. This is the most basic economic model and it is the underlying model for a capitalist society.

Oil is a little different though because, believe it or not, it is sold for far less than people are actually willing to pay. It is like food...or more like real estate which is a limited necessity being sold for less than its true value (which is extremely high). We are pretty much at the mercy of those who own these things.

i guess by artificial i meant something like "not essential", something that doesn't fit in the category of 'primary needs'.

There's just so many people out there with so many things to sell and with different ways of telling you what you need to buy (ads, news, government etc...) that it takes a form of psychological pressure on consumers.

There emerges out of all this some sort of subconscious need to useless consuming.

And all this just because rich people want to become richer...

I think somebody needs a better dictionary.

extort: to obtain (as money) from a person by force, intimidation, or undue or unlawful use of authority or power
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=extort

That entry is Webster. There are a couple of others that offer no essential differences.

Voluntary transactions are not extortion.

If pressure is put on you to make a transaction, plus if this pressure is backed with false arguments ("buy this and you'll be happier"), it can be considered slight extortion.

No, it is not slight extortion. It is called salesmanship. If you don't want to partake in the transaction then you have every right not to.

I don't think so. Maybe coercion?

No not coercion, coercion would be if you were told you'd die if you didn't buy something.

Extortion is like coercion with a fake smile
