Poly-Fil wicking contams into liquid?
    #3872911 - 03/05/05 02:55 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I have a couple big apple sauce (nectar of the gods!) jars with honey water going. Some how mushrooms spores got in and mycelia started to grow. My question is this: i want to terrorize the mycelia by shaking the jar and breaking it apart. BUT,this will get the poly-fil plug in the lid wet with honey water, which will soak through to the top like a wick. I would think that this would make it easy for another contam (like mold) to start growing on the filter and work its way into the jar. I would run into the same problem when i have to turn the jars upside down to remove the nasty mycelia (with a syringe).

Is this realistic or am i just dumb, again? :stoned:

Thanks

This can be a problem, you're correct. This entire Avent baby bottle is PC'able. You can use the entire thing or modify the nipple to container of your choice. The advantage here is that you can squeeze the nipple just below the Poly Fill during shaking as to prevent it from getting wet.

next time use a 1/2 pint jar or larger.

and put a marble in the jar...before you pressure cook the jar.

there are better lid idea's out there.
like divers, that he suggested...and other ones.

This one has a silicone injection port and a round bandaid for air exchange....and you can see the marble in the jar..for breaking up mycelium.

Look at some of "agar"'s posts...he has some great lid idea's too.

good luck!~

just swirl the fluid, then reverse the way it's moving, do that afew times and when u remove the fluid, just tilt the jar, don't turn it upside-down.

I use 1qt jars for Karo with poly fill lids. You shouldn't fill the jar more than a 1/3 of the way up to ensure you don't have any probs with it getting wet. I've never had a problem in years. Just be gentle when swirling and use pieces of glass or marbles in the jar to help seperate the tissue.
