mason lids question

hey everyone i have a bit of a problem i live in a colder climate region and i am having a very hard time trying to locate more mason jars i dont really need the jars i just need the lids since i cant find them is there any way to reuse the lids with holes on them?

ya just clean real good and go thru the whole process again so the answer is yes and try meijers if you have one around there not seasonal

yes im not worried about cleaning the jars im worried about water escaping from the holes in the lid

Water escaping how? I dont really get your worries but lids can be reused for sure..

well as im sure u know there is water in the substrate mixture and when i boil the jars the water will escape threw the hole in the lid of the jar is there any good way to cover up these holes

Check all your local grocery stores. All the grocery stores around here have canning supplies year round, and they should be starting to stock up for the spring season.

Didnt you have holes the first time you did it? You put foil over the top of the jars or cover them with tape if your talking the PF Tek. If your talking grains, the tyvek holds in water (guess your not since boiing the jars though). You have to have holes in it when you boil the jars, otherwise when sterilized you cant inject with spores.

i am using the soil/vermiculite tek and the first time i did it i did not put the holes in untill after sterilization are you saying i should tape the holes and put tinfoil ontop

ok i got you. yeah just throw it in the pot o' boiling water with tinfoil over it. you need to worry more about excess water getting in than getting out.

You definatly are supposed to put the holes in before sterilizing...that would increase your contam rate a lot putting holes in afterward. Just tin foil over it will suffice. No tape even really needed.
