Russian Cactus Growers Fear New Law on Peyote
March 04, 2005
mosnews.com

The editor of the Cactus Club magazine, Viktor Gapon, has organized a round table meeting in response to a Russian government order recommending that not more than two peyote cacti can be grown at home.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov signed the order in September. Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) was placed on a list of banned plants because it contains mescaline that can be used to make a narcotic drug.

Gapon was quoted by the Moskovskie Novosti newspaper as saying it is hard to distinguish the peyote cactus from other cacti. To be able to identify the right type of cactus the government should set up a specialized group, he said.

There are only about 300 peyote cacti in Russia, with a king cactus costing about 60 euros. To make enough narcotic for a single dose, up to 30 plants would have to be dried, the newspaper wrote.

Cactus growers are now afraid that they may be at risk of being detained. The head of the Moscow Helsinki group, Lyudmila Alekseyeva was quoted by the paper as saying the Russian authorities were already searching for spies among physicists. "Today they come to arrest spies, tomorrow they will come for cactus growers."

Mescaline can be used to make a narcotic. And here I thought mescaline was active all on its own.

30 Peyote!? Unless they're talking about really small or weak ones, then 30 buttons would be quite a bit of mescaline.

What!? Are we in Cold War II or something? And does that last sentence comparing spies to cactus growers make even the slightest bit of sense to anyone?
