Opinions for a newby
    #3869939 - 03/04/05 08:13 PM (19 years, 28 days ago)

Hey. Wanting to try growing for the first time and want some others opinions. I want to make my growing as clandestine as possible so I think I will try using an under the bed plastic storage bin. The are roughly 6.6 inches high. Is this too short? I'm going to try growing cubes and accord to PF you pick them young, so maybe headroom in the bin won't be as crucial.

Another space saving idea I had... I saw some 4 0z canning jars, which is a quarter pint. I think I can get more surface area with the same amount of substrate (having more smaller cakes). I plan on just halving all measurements used on half pint jars. One would think the mycellum would take hold faster given less substrate. The only problem I see is the cakes may dry out easier. Any thoughts.

Would a casing technique be more effective for my situation.

I'm biased to casings so right off the bat I'm going to recommend casing to you. 6.6 inches will be enough, I've done casings in that amount of space. Choose some pans around 2 inch depth that fit nicely side-by-side inside your container, and the remaining 4 inches will be fruiting space.

Polyfill will be your friend in this scenario, drill holes and use it liberally to get the most air exchange you can out of that tiny space.
