I have one suggestion for you, but it's not a very good suggestion. I don't think there is any real way to guess humidity. Anyway here it is.

When you have a hot shower (without the fan on and the doors and windows closed) the room will reach about 98% humidity. I have tested this in my own house and it is always true for me.

Now lets assume that your hygrometer is working, but the calibration is fucked. Take your hygrometer into the shower with you, have your shower and check the humidity. If it reads the same reading as it did in your tank then the tank would also be at 98% humidity.

98% humidity is good for a tank.

However, as long as you follow the perlite recommendations here at the shroomery there is really no way NOT to get at least 90% humidity. Hope that helps you and happy tripping :muppet:

i have an incubator with casings that are rescue attempts, so naturally their not given optimal care all i do is make sure the temp is between 83-86F and I spray the casings with water+h2o2 5 or 6 times a day and.

These guys just popped up from a contaminated casing that was succesfully rescued (the casing stays in the ghetto incubator with no hygrometer) so you wont get optimal results but theyll grow.

it should be fine if its only a couple percent off, just keep the RH a little lower than usual (if you dont want to invest in a new one)

Yes I would say its fucked, there is no way to get 84% in a room during a hot shower. I remember I kind of fucked mine up once by disifecting it with lysol, aparently the alcohol makes the reading all whacky. Once it dried out though it was fine.

Now one thing that concerns me is you said your perlite floats? I don't think you should ever see your perlite float because you only put a small amount of water in. If you have a 3/4 inch layer of perlite the water should reach at most 1/4 inch.

It is hard to see the level, I know, but using less makes it more humid, believe me. I'm not sure I understood your comment though and maybe you did it exactly right.

In that case you would have nothing to worry about.

That's a good level to have.

A good way to check for sure is to dig a hole and see how much water fills in. The water level should not be over half the perlite level.
