The Conscience of a Hacker, aka "The Hacker's Manifesto"
    #3868304 - 03/04/05 02:42 PM (19 years, 29 days ago)

It has been just over 19 years since The Hacker's Manifesto was first published in Phrack (Volume One, Issue 7, Phile 3 of 10). I remember the first time I read this. The thrill I felt! To know that there were others, out there, others "like me" was a truly mind-expanding moment.

What has happened to the scene, in the 19 years since the Manifesto was published? Where did all the real hackers go? Did they all go the way of L0pht? Have they sold out and joined the corps? Are we really left with nothing but script kiddies?

Most importantly, does the Manifesto still speak true?

Because I can still feel the thrill...

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...

Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a hacker, enter my world...

Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...

Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explainfor the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...
Or feels threatened by me...
Or thinks I'm a smart ass...
Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing throughthe phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..."

I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals.
We explore... and you call us criminals.
We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals.
We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals.
You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all...
after all, we're all alike.

I think all the hacker kiddies just grew up and found better things to do with their life.

Hacking has gotten me into lots of trouble back into the day, not to mention fired from jobs. Really not worth it.

That gave me chills. Big-time.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Well obviously hackers age, too :smirk:

But where's the new ones? Did the art die off, only to be left to script morons and darkside "hackers"?

Most hackers today stay in deep seclusion like they should, and they don't want to share their secrets with anybody because they would just get publicized and foiled.

Yeah I figured any of the real hackers had all gone so far underground by now that there would be little hope of finding anyone.

I fell out of the scene many moons ago, and I fear I've just been gone for too long to return :frown:

Lol man! Yeah I remember back in the day before the internet became cool, when the mere word "internet" was met with not more than a blank stare :smirk:

Then the horde came rushing in...

I wonder if there are any BBS's still in existence? Last one I saw was at least 7-8 years ago, and it was on the net, instead of dialup.

I used to have a hack/phreak/anarchy BBS back in high school.

It was called "The Rotting Rectum".  My Screen name was "Taco Rapist".

Those were the days.....

 CRACKERS, damnit.

But anyway, real hackers are alive and well, some count me among them.

As far as security exploration, it too is alive and well.

The new entryway.

Yes, and that is a Good Thing.

However, most of the BBS culture is crackers/phreakers/warez d00dz - that's just the way it is.

Most hackers can crack. Most crackers can't hack. To quote ESR, being able to break into a car does not make you an automotive technition.

No, those are crackers and script kiddies, question_for_joo. Hackers built and continue to keep the internet running well. Crackers impede us. Hackers create. Crackers destroy.

Trendal; yeah, it's one of my favorites to explain the difference between a cracker and a hacker.

The unfortunate thing is the media got behind the call everyone hackers thing but we are forever fighting it - there's a page in the jargon file with a pre-written letter you can send to editors requesting they not use hacker as a pejorative, but the correct term "cracker" written by RMS to the Wall Street Journal.
