Car Subs on home stereo?
    #3867633 - 03/04/05 02:14 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Eh, amy dad brought be some goodies the other day 2- 12" subs.. But theyre for a car sterio... And Im not dumb enough to let them get stolen, sooo How can I go about hooking them up to my house sterio amp? Or will they just plug and play?

I have no idea what the stats are on the subs.. I have a Newer Yamaha amp 350w. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm not a stereo expert, but from an electrical standpoint, you'd better make sure it's all compatible. A car amp probably doesn't put out the same voltage and current as a home one. You'd better check into this, or maybe someone more knowledgeable than me will reply.

Yeah I think the electrical shit is way different for home and car sub woofers (being ~12v for a car and ~120v for home). I don't think there is an easy way to hook them up without fucking something up.

I think I saw on a car audio forum once where a guy used a car sub on a home theater setup. BUT he built this crazy electrical apparatus so everything was getting the right current. I think he even used car batteries.

They'll work just fine, it doesn't matter if it's AC or DC because a home stereo amp will convert to dc before going to the output. The only difference usually is home stereo speakers are 8 ohm and car speakers are 4 ohm, but that's not very true all the time. I had 8 ohm speakers in my car. All that really matters is that your amp, whether home or car isn't putting out more watts than the subs can handle.

Cool, my amp deffinatly has less power than these babies can handle..

I was lookin at my amp and its got a subwoofer output on the back, so im gonna go buy a soldering gun and some old rca cables.

im no expert either but they are different ohms. most home stuff uses 8 ohm (your amp will most likely be unless its a good one) and your speakers are most liekly 4 for cars.

in car audio if you wire your speakers up to have less resistence you will most likely fry your amp. somtimes this literally means fry (smoke).

talk to a stereo shop. dont say you want your car subs on your home system. say you have some 4 ohm subs you want to hook up to your amp. have all the specs laid out in front of you.

The subs have NO infor on them anywhere.. I know tehy are Thump brand and are 12", iv tried to find the same ones with no luck.

And that Subwoofer out is only good for self powered subs..

don't do it.

there's a reason car audio is sold as car audio and home audio is sold as home audio.

I hooked my Infinity 1230W up to my surround sound to test it out, and it worked fine. The sub that came with the system is only 8" and the receiver only put out 50 watts. My Infinity runs at 300w rms, and it sounded perfectly fine.
