Smoking and working out
    #3861506 - 03/03/05 08:11 AM (19 years, 30 days ago)

Hey all,

Just looking for general articles or information on what effects smoking has on muscle formation, circulation, blood cell contraction, ect. By nature smoking is awful for us, but I'm curious as to how much it can affect muscle gain in weight lifting or just general muscle formation.

I used to train with weights on a frequent basis, and smoke on and off too. When I upped my smoking to full time (oops) within months my workouts went downhill, and rather quickly. I lost visible muscle mass on my arms after a year of smoking, even though I was still continuously working out. It was a scary wake up call as to what I was doing to my body.

I'm winning the hard battle with quitting smoking again, but suppose I just need some extra info to keep me motivated.

Well, it's like fixing a car and breaking it at the same time. Counter productive. If you're going to do it, then do it to the fullest.

Smoking anything is bad for your lungs, and your cardio is the driving force behind your muscle build up. Muscles need lots of oxygen to grow, so if your lungs aren't in peak shape, the rest of you can't be either. Just my two cents as a person with a half-med degree
