Misting and Humidity in Casings
    #3866919 - 03/04/05 08:24 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I am researching Misting. How often is misting required when casing if there is no other source of humidification?

Thanks!

Depends on ambieant RH. do you live in a rain forest, a desert or betweeen? Try twice a day and go from the signs you can see.

Avoid misting the casing surface at all costs.

Buy some hydroton or perlite and an aquarium pump.

Not that often, maybe once or twice a day at most. You don't want to saturate your casing layer because that's good for contams and bad for pinhead formation.

A few very light mistings over the course of a day provide the perfect amount of evaporation off your casing layer. Once you get it down and know what to look for, you'll know exactly how much to mist. Until then, experiment and find your own misting groove.

I read that if the casing starts to pull away from the container then its dry. So if I understand correctly never mist the surface directly. How can you tell if the casing is moist enough?
Also if a casing has myc growing all along the surface what is the best way to recover for pinning? Last question: I have seen some myc before on cakes and casings that looks like wet like melting snow, does anyone know what this means?

Thanks alot! :sun:

If a casing is pulling away from the sides of the container, it's because the network has shrunk from a flush of mushrooms, i.e. depleted mass from producing mushrooms.

You can mist the casing directly, just don't soak it. Check out pinning strategy:
