Air exchange really that big of a factor? Rye cake, PF jars
    #3865072 - 03/03/05 11:06 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

The friend from which I learned how to grow used to grow and sell shrooms for a living, so he was VERY experianced. He used the PF jar method and skipped a few steps that people seem to make a big deal about.

I never saw him loosening lids or taking the tape off of holes during incubation. I never saw him flipping jars during incubation or even doing ANYTHING to promote air exchange. His jars usually colonized in 3-4 weeks and everything was all dandy.

i am doing my first grow now, and i'm using rye cakes (he used BRF, but I couldn't find any, so I had to use rye). They are colonizing, but VERY slowly. There is no mycelium visible on the sides of the jar after two weeks, but I know for a fact that they are colonizing inside.

Now, should I be worrying about air exchange, or moisture problems, or anything else? Or is rye just slow as fuck, and I should stop worrying?

Also, is there a way to use whole rice grains in the PF jars without grinding them up? Would I have to soak them, or could I just put them in dry? What measurements would I need if I were to soak them?

I know these are a lot of random questions, but I can't find any answers in the FAQs.

Thanks

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Yes. Inadequate air exchange can slow or halt colonization.

Yeah, air exchange will cause them to stall, but only after the myc. has germinated and started to grab hold.

Hi. Your friend doesn't sound very experienced using the PF tek. Maybe in 1999 that could be considered experienced, but not in the last 5 years.

Anyways, you're questions are an array of general cultivation questions too numerous to answer in one reply, but which could be answered by you reading the FAQ and Teks up and down.

He did have a shitload of jars (like over 6 dozen)... And I was the midget helping him (when he had school). Hey, he made a nice living anyways...

But the point is that he got them to grow with little to no contamination. And I'm not planning on growing tremendous amounts, just enough for personal use.

So do most people here use bulk substrate? I see more threads relating to bulk substrate than to PF jars. Are there advantages to using bulk?
