    #3863957 - 03/03/05 07:41 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have read alot of talk about patching and have never come up with a solid tek for it. What exactly is patching and what is the best way to do this??

It's simply applying a light amount of your casing materials on the areas where mycelium has poked up. Very light, let it sprinkle out of your fingertips. Don't dumptruck or pack it on.

In a perfect casing, the mycelum would grow to the surfce uniformly thus giving the best possible chance of an even pinset (pins growing uniformy across the casing).

In reality things rarely work out perfectly, so patching is used to even up the growth across the casing. When a section of the casing is showing colonization at or just below the casing surface, and other areas are showing no colonization, a small amount of casing material is added to the area that is showing growth. This prevents the mycelia in that area from reaching the casing surface ahead of the slower growing areas of the casing.

so you do not remove the layer of casing that has mycellium protruding through?

No. Just add more casing material to the surface of that area.

It will give the rest of the casing that's not showing signs of growth a chance to catch up.
