Worm Castings?
    #3862280 - 03/03/05 02:14 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hey, I've been a fan of bulk subs for a while, and wanted to try them, but my gf dont like eating poop... (wont let me use manure). So would worm castings be differant? Its like worm poop or something right? But it would be more "earthy" and "soil-like" than poop, correct? If it is I may be able to use it and enjoy the monster fruits people using bulk subs can grow. (Any local sources, Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart?)

Also I hear verm is an ok substitute for hay?

Thanks guys!

Worm castings rock.... they don't smell, tell her they're worm spit !!!..LOL

Highly contam resistant, mix 3:1 castings to verm.

Homedepot etc. usually don't cary it, check hydro shops or nurseries.

verm is NOT a substitute to straw, has no nutrients, but holds alot of water !!

Wormcastings are great.  Verm can be used, its one of the best things I belive.  Straw is hella cheap though, and provides nutes and railways for the myc to travel while its ripping through the substrate on its spawn run.  I wont go w/o straw on a spawn run ever again.

Go to your local hydroponics store.  Worm poo is a little pricey.  Usally comes in 5lbs Bins or 20lbs Bags.

  I do a 1:1 myself - I'll try a 3:1 myself sometime, just seems really poopy :P

I'd like to know how worm castings compare to poop or compost? Flush and yeild wise. Better then just straight straw? As good as horse poop?

I'd also like to hear/see proof/details between what you may have used if you have comments comparing. Like, I'm sure it will grow mushrooms fine, just really want an experienced opinion on a comparison..

No single ingredient is going to work as well in mushroom cultivation as a combination of ingredients. Worm castings are great. Compost is great. Straw is great. Manure is great. Coir is great. Coffee grinds are great. Now, mix them all together, cut 50% with verm and watch the myc really go crazy.

I have used just worm castings, worm castings with straw, worm castings with cow poo and straw, and just cow poo and straw always spawned with bird seed or bird seed mixed with rye berries and i cant really give you the exact differences but i can tell you i have had the best pin sets, mature size and over all quality with the worm castings mixed with cow poo and straw. But thats just how its been for me. I hope it works as well for everyone else.

How about worm castings/straw vs cow poo/straw? How do they compare?

True, AFOAF ground barley, rye, rice, mixed with manure/straw mix, mycelium growth is very thick, as with a mixed grains jar.

If i had to choose one mix i would go with the worm castings but it seems to col. better with a little bit of cow poo mixed in. I mean the castings do col very well but i think it looks healthier and goes a little faster with the poo mixed in there.
