Breaking up coir....
    #3861402 - 03/03/05 07:14 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

What is an easy way to break up coir bricks? So jammed tight together, pain in the ass ripping them apart.

Also should I wear gloves breaking it up?

Use a knife or screwdriver to start a break, then just peel away desired size chunk with your hands. I don't wear gloves when mixing casing, but it's a good idea if you're not going to sterilize your mix.

Fill me in on the correct order here...

Break up coir
Mix in 60% verm
then mix in water?

If i want to pasteurize, at what point do I do that?

No, you add water to the coir first to expand it. All these things are very easily outlined in an easy pictorial here:

Use just enough water to make it expand. Do not follow directions on the package it will make the coir too wet for storage purposes.I have found that 2\3 of what they say will fluff it up yet it will not be so damn wet that when you store it in bags it does not grow nasty shit on it.
