A good deal or what?
    #3831292 - 02/25/05 12:39 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I bought this 2.7m cactus today for NZ$60 (US$43) from a guy who said it was too big for his room. He thought it was a san ped, though it looks more like a scopulicola to me. Either way I'm over the moon

Good deal for the size of the cactus. Doesn't look like a pedro. However, it's too difficult to do an ID with that pic.

If it was pedro you would think it would have branched by now. Still an awesome cactus.

Heh, I see you're in chch then...yes a sweet deal, pedros and scops commonly sell for $20 - $30 per foot. Get a closer up of the spines and we could tell if its scop or pedro or something else.

It's a bit hard to take a closer pic with my webcam but I'm almost 100% sure it's a scop (which are my favorite). I have several others but none higher than a couple of feet, it'll have to stay outdoors due to its height but it should overwinter ok. Seeing as I live in a student area I'm a bit concerned about its lifespan, eating this baby is out of the question!

5 scops at back + 1 big scop, 8 san pedro cuttings/pups at front

And can anyone confirm this as a peyote?

I'm not completely fluent on what other baby cacti look like, but that certainly has the looks of a peyote pup.

btw - im pretty sure that you are right and your new cactus is a scop. congrats :-)

I decided to take the big scop indoors seeing as it won't last a week outside in my area. All the ceilings in my flat are 40cm too low for it, so I've got it poking through the attic manhole in the laundry. I've also got a heater there with it to dry out the soil (I watered and repotted it today) as I'm concerned about root rot. It's not going to get any sun where it is now. Should this be ok?

why don't you cut it... like... 2/3 from the top?
would still be big and would fit...
and pups would come...
just a silly suggestion.
'what a problem, my huge scop doesn't fits indoors' (i wish i had this problem)!

Actually I think it would do just fine outdoors over winter. We have scops, pedroes, peruvians down in Dunedin that get freezing temps a bit and fuck all sun, quite a bit of rain, and come springtime they perk right up and keep on growing. If you're real parinoid about root rot, you could always put a plastic covering over the soil for winter. And good on ya for doing the repot - I'm amazed that it got to that size in that tiiiny pot!

Nice collection by the way, I would agree on the scop ID based from those pics. And looking at those other scops I see the characteristic rib deletions etc...crazy huh. I've also noticed that there seems to be at least 2-3 main phenotypes within the scop species (that I've seen anyway)...one (lets say 'A' usually has 5-6 ribs, with feelable (1-2mm) spines, and less pronounced folds at each areole, also almost always that type deletes one rib at a height of 5-15cm from seed. The other type (B) is much chunkier and tends more to 4-5 ribs, with very sunken areoles and very short spines, looking at it side on there are big folds at each areole, and this type loves to add and delete ribs like crazy. Here's a few pics of mine just for interests sake.

Top down of type 'A'

A couple of pups on a type 'B'.

Close up of tip of 'B'

Example of 'B's rib antics

It looks like you've mainly got what I'm calling type 'A's, the big one could be a B, although keeping in mind that this is only a casual observation I've made and it could well be that they don't fit into distinct subtypes but rather a chaotic mish-mash gradient of variation. Anyway I think I've rambled enough now...:)

Awesome, thanks Zee_werp. I've moved my scop outside again, my only concern really was that it'll be hacked up or stolen, but as Laozi said, "one who does not trust enough will not be trusted."

Today I acquired another 5 scops the same size as my other 5 (NZ$20 each), as well as a 3ft peruvianus (NZ$20) and a young san ped (NZ$10). I found a place in Heathcote that supplies most of the nurseries in chch. Way to go wholesale prices!

And yeah, it's interesting the way scops seem to fall into one or the other phenotypes you described, albeit with some mish-mash, ie. the big scop doesn't display any rib antics but I'd say it's certainly a 'B'.

I also noticed that one of your scops has produced a couple of pups, do you find they do this as commonly as san peds?

Damn man, those are some good deals!!

The scops definatley don't pup as much as the pedros. The one in the pic is the only one of mine that has pupped, and it was about 1 meter tall when it did so...the other one, the type A in the first pic, is about 50cm tall and has shown signs of pups (swollen areoles at base with some hit of green coming through) but they haven't developed to anything as yet...it was almost as though it had formed quite a few but they had somehow terminated before popping out. Will have to examine it more closely.

Nice...looks like a Type A to me...those things get fat as fuck...another thing I've noticed about the Type A's, is that they get more obvious 'growth lines' than the B's, as in those lines you can see going from the ridge to the valley of each rib. Faslimy, you should post more pics of your different cacti, im keen to see your whole collection!
