WBS popped??
    #3860627 - 03/03/05 12:06 AM (19 years, 30 days ago)

In Docs tek it says that if you simmer and all most of the grain pops than you have wasted your efforts. After PCing my WBS I noticed that a lot of the grains are popped. Is this Normal?? Should I still knock em up??

Knock em

The most basic bacteria is easily overtaken by the mycelium.

The only real concerns with popped grain would be that they would be 2 sticky to shake properly, and i also believe that i've heard that the popped grains are more likely to contam.... However, when i cook my rye, many grains pop, and it still works beautifully... So yeah, i'd say knock em up!!!!

Mushrooms, in despite of their name, dont like mushed grains too much. Ive tried it on popped rye/milet before and it sucked.
But if you have spores enough just give it a go. Otherwise buy another kilo of EBS. It aint that xpensive.

How do you prevent your WBS from Popping? Should I avoid the simmering part. It seams as though If I simmer they are fully saturated and then If I PC I totally blow them apart. Not all of them mind you. Is it the heat or the water that is Popping them?

Im all for no simmering. Soak 12-18 hours, rinse, strain out all excess water, PC. Everytime i have tried to simmer they either popped while simmering, or while in the pressure cooker. As long as you soak, you will germinate the endospores, making them easier to kill. Simmering is not necessary.

That clears everything up, My problem was the same as you say popping during the simmer and Mass popping in the PC. So no simmering it is.
Thanks lengthyfellow

I just screwed up my WBS batch a couple of days ago by simmering after a 24 hour soak. I'm going to PC a new batch tomorrow. That batch is soaking right now (24 hour) then I'm just going to rinse them very well and then load them up. No simmer. The one's I simmered look like they're getting some nice wetspot in them.

I soak 16-20 hours, short 10 minute simmer after that.
The heat pops them, they get oversaturated with water by that.

Good luck,
MF
