vaccines only work for viruses dumbass. they basically get your immune system used to the virus by injecting a similiar one, so if the real one comes along your body will have antibodies etc. ready

Also the fungus does not have an immune system or antibodys so it cant learn how to kill contams very well.
But there are some strains the resist contams more than others so i suspect those traits could be enhanced through exposure to small amtounts of contam an maybe crossin different strains, But i understand this is perty difficult.

Your immune system reacts the same way for fungal and bacterial infections as well. Dumbass. You only have one immune system. Well it has two subdivisions but basically its just one system. They just don't use the vaccine concept for fungal and bacterial infections because we have a rash of pills that people can pop for them. If we had pills to stop the virus' then vaccines wouldn't have been needed.

Oh, sorry for calling you a dumbass.

The fungus does sort of have an immune system. Just not a very complex one containing anti-bodies. Mostly just enzymes that either digest an imposing contaminant or those that restrict its growth.

Mushrooms, mycelium, is extremely resistant to all competitor molds, bacteria, etc.. in nature. We are growing them in an artificial environment. Invitro. It is because we are growing invitro, that we have a problem. If COMPETITOR molds get in the petri, or jar, they don't really kill the fungus, they just replicate, and reproduce at a higher rate. That is why sterility is so neccessary, you don't want any competition on the plate or in the jar, because your fungus, will lose every time.
If no contaminants are present there is no competition, your fungus does great. Once you move your fungus to EX-VITRO, you reintroduce contaminants via casing layer. If your mycelium is slow to colonize this layer, you run the risk of Competitor contaminants again. Introduced by the air, or the nonsterile casing itself.
I can't follow the notion that a little competition is good, a little competition can be devastating. In nature, the cow manure has already been selectively composted to the point of exclusion of competition. When we cultivate the way we do it is all about excluding contaminants, not building resistanceto them. Losing strain vigor from to many cell replications, is more probable as a cause of strain deteriation, not it losing any resistance to contaminants. There are no contaminants present in a jar of spawn, that is why it is successful. Bacteria and competitor molds all replicate at a much higher rate than Our mushrooms.
Now since most contaminants are fungal, it would be hard to insert a gene into the DNA of a fungus, that could produce substances that killed only other fungus. And bacteria, well I think trying to outcompete a bacteria is like trying to outrun LIGHT.
All genetic engineering of plants is fucking insanity. Plants suffer problems because most of them are being grown outside their native range, and or global transportation and import export has enabled foreign pathogens to be introduced into areas were they are not native. It is all a bunch of shit, with out a cure. Every cure becomes a new problem, EVERY CURE!!!!!!!
Sorry I went off topic!!!

It seems like a worthy goal to breed a better fungus, but I certainly dont know enough about mycology or cellular biology to know the feasability of such a project.

Lets say you have several strong mycelium cakes, and one cake of green mold, or cobwebbing, or some other common contaminant. If you cut out a very small chunk of green mold and attached it to a mycelium cake, would the mycelium learn and adapt ways to fight it? Maybe if you stunted the mold first, by say, dipping it in h2o2 (maybe even alchohol or some other agent) it would give the mycelium a better chance of destroying it before the mold could recover. Seems like introducing evolutionary changes in any life form cant be that easy, but maybe its worth a try just to see what happens.

Has anybody tried something similar and have any data to share?

The cause for small pox is a virus.
Abtibiotics were first in use around 1940.
