the truth about peat?
    #3859698 - 03/02/05 10:40 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

i've heard tell that peat moss will cause adverse effects on the ph of your casing layer.
someone else had reported contamination problems w/ peat.
i got a 2ft cube of it and have always picked out the sticks and misc. matter that i find. are these a source of cont.?
i use it 50/50 w/ verm.
i would use coir but i can't, for the life of me find it.
what alternatives do i have?
what are the setbacks to casing w/ straight verm.?

get sphagnum peat moss and mix in some crushed oyster shells to balance the ph.

It will only cause adverse effects on the ph of your casing layer if you let it   That's what short term + long term buffers are great for, especially in the case of peat because it comes acidic out of the bag as you probably know.

In my experience peat is more contam to cobweb mold, but I prefer it over the texture of coir.  50/50 peat/verm makes a great casing layer.

Or hydrated lime at the rate of 5% of the peat. That means for two cups of peat, use 1 1/2 tablespoons of hydrated(water soluable) lime. Don't count the verm when you calculate how much lime to use. Peat is far superior to coir for casings. Coir is a much better substrate material. It has too many nutes to make a good casing.

try to find Plantation Mix..its sphagnum, peat, verm already balanced with oyster, comes in about a 5 lb. bag and cost around 3 bucks..makes an excellent casing layer.

Yes, coir is very prone to overlay.

Verm is a poor casing layer because it is too dense when wet and by itself (the rice in PF cakes helps to drain it). I used 50/50 peat and verm with no buffers. I think i baked them both for like 10 minutes in the oven set to 245. I got some contam but not until the third flush. I filled a syringe with some peroxied water and hosed down the affected area. I tossed the casing after that flush cause it was spent so i am not sure if it completely killed off the green stuff (kinda doubt it) but i didnt see it again for at least a week or two so i beat that sucka back!

oh man... you might want to rethink that sterilization technique just a little.

long term buffer= grit / short term= fine
right?
so what if i were to save egg shells and grind them to a coarse powder and mix them with an even ratio of oyster shells. c
can anyone think of any reasoning that it should not be equal parts?
would this be long and short term?

eggshells r might be easier to find but i jus went to dave's soda and petfood city and found some hermit crab sand, which is calcium carbonate. Try to find that if u can.

My 2 cents
did bout 10 casings now some with peat/verm (70/30 and less verm) and also 100% peat.

So far one casing contammed. All of them were WBS to straw or straw/poo casings.

I add calciumsource used in gardens.

I think peat is a good casing layer and easy to obtain. Might add some more verm in next grows again.

MF

Perhaps that is why it has been used for years in the commercial mushroom industry? Very informative...

Chill out ATWAR. Not everyone is an expert and knows what commercial growers use. MF was just offering his experience and knowledge, which I appreciate cause I don't know much about peat.
