Bulk colonization: the plastic blanket. Necessary?
    #3859679 - 03/02/05 10:37 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I'm spawning to manure/straw in small 10 gallon tubs. I'm going to saran wrap the tops of the tubs (even though they have lids), poke holes, and filter with micropore surgical tape (this stuff owns!). I'm gonna do this so that I can check progress without exposing to open air.

If I sprayed the walls of the tub after spawning, would I still need to add the plastic blanket over the colonizing bulk? The tops and bottoms of my substrate are going to colonize very fast as I'm heavily layering the spawn at these crucial locations.

The cover is to help reduce gas exchange until fruiting is desired. An increase in gas exchange is one of the signals to the mycelium to start fruiting. In nature this signal is accomplished by a break through the soil or dung block to the surface. You, though, are trying to fake a massive break through the soil over the entire tray such that many more mushrooms than in nature form simultaneously.

So you would say that the blanket is necessary, I can buy into that.
Do you think then, that holes in the blanket are necessary if gas exchange is undesired? Without holes, it wouldn't be so tight that gas exchange would be entirely prevented.

a great post i read by agar explains this...
at this stage you want GAS exchange,
when fruiting, you want AIR exchange

gas exchange is just a release of gas from the container, not total fresh air exchanges like when fruiting

>>at this stage you want GAS exchange,

The wording of that is a little off though.  Exchange - "To give in return for something received"; and AIR is a GAS.  During incubation CO2 gas is released, nothing needs to be added to the system.  In fruiting however, CO2 is exchanged for O2 (air).
I know that's being a bit anal, but I've seen that repeated a few times and thought it should be corrected (unless I'm wrong).

Yeah, I think agar is about right. It's sort of matter of wording here. You want a relatively low amount of exchange during incubation periods, a few holes in a cover is plenty. When you fruit out, you want much more, like 1 to 3 per hour I think they say. The point is that there should be a difference. If there isn't, the pinset will suffer a little. It might work out in the later flushes, though.

Well my fruiting tubs are small 10 gallon tub-casings. What I wanna do is just skip the blanket and saran wrap the top of the tub so that I can peak in without disturbing or exposing. I'm sure that the CO2 will build up pretty quickly, then when I fruit and release it there will still be that dramatic change in gas exchange, simulating their breakthrough the fresh air. What does everyone think?

Then if the blanket is also there to keep the substrate from drying out, I could just spray the sides before I start them incubating. It should get done pretty quickly, I'm spawning at 1:4.

You also want to cover the straw to prevent it from dehydrating. Also with the plastic (or alufoil) on it pushes the strawpins down that would otherwise point up (some always do) and would not colonize.

If thats the case, when you wanna case , cut those away.

Good luck!

I'm sorry, you are wrong. In this hobby, "gas exchange" has a specific meaning of "releasing of built up gases" and "air exchange" is short for "fresh air exchange" which specifically means the exchange of stale air in a terrarium for fresh air. During incubation co2 is held in because it is needed and only excess is released. Thats why only a small filtered hole is needed. In fruiting though the fresh air is exchanged for highly enriched co2 air/stale air.

You were kind of right, but the correction wasnt needed since the original stament was right. Since were being anal about things

By the way, I've found the plastic blanket to be benificial to straw. Allows for not drying out and gas exchange (the release of co2). But does still retain some within the substrate for better colonization.

I dont think its needed at all though.
