The right to take one's own life
    #3859041 - 03/02/05 06:36 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Do you believe a government has the right to make killing oneself illegal? What about euthanasia(sp?).

I think the two main reasons why many countries make it illegal is because of deep religious roots in many countries(even if there is a seperation of church and state), and the fact that some countries (IMO the USA) are run like a business. To them, thier population is a bunch of consumers. When you pay taxes each year, you are a consumer paying to live in the country. By losing an individual, the government loses income.

If it were legal to take your own life or have someone do it for you, it might seem more morally right. It would still be looked down upon, but it would not be nearly as big of a deal as it is today. I know people say suicide is a permanent fix to a temporary problem and it is wrong(which I agree with), but I still think an individual should be able to choose life or death.

This was covered a week or two ago.

But no, the government has no business in legislating suicide laws.

I always thought it doesn't matter what the government says because if you get it right the first time, it doesn't really matter.

I'm going to agree with most people. What could be a more basic freedom than to decide your own very existence. I can't understand why these laws were even made. It saddens me further people have attempted and failed, and get charged with shit.. like the last thing they need is legal problems.

In cases of uncurable disease, I think people should be allowed to suicide. However, I don't think people with psychiatric problems shouldn't be allowed to. In these cases, some sort of psychiatric treatment would be best...

Oregon is the only State that it is legal in, no?
The Feds are all over Oregons' case about this issue, they need to back off.
Say it with me people "MORE POWER TO THE STATES, LESS TO THE FEDS".
What other places on the planet is euthanasia officially legalized by a civilized government?
