Transfering video to computer
    #3857449 - 03/02/05 03:38 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I have a digital video camcorder. I'm having problems uploading video to my computer. I can take still pictures on the camera, and those upload fine. But whenever I plug it into my computer and want to upload video, it says that there is no camera or anything. Do I need to install something special? This is through the USB ports too. Can you not transfer video from camera to computer via USB? Or do I need a firewire port? Any help is much appreciated.

i was just donig some research online (google) and what i've been reading is that video must be transfered through firewire cables. So I am gonna buy one of those. But I don't have a firewire port on my PC so I'm gonna have to get that too. I have tapes and tapes of footage that I would like to edit and make videos. I bought my video camera originally for skateboarding, but I ended getting so much random and funny stuff on it that I could make some cool videos. So I think my problem is that I need the firewire.

I wonder why video must be through firewire, while pictures can transfer through usb...odd

Yep, you need firewire. I get asked that question every few days at work. From what I've read firewire has 2-3 times faster data transfer rate than usb. Both usb and firewire were invented by apple. Maybe Steve Jobs will explain it better if you email him, lol.

I transfer video from my sony camcorder to pc all the time through usb, it doesn't look great but it works. Maybe my camera is special or something but I certainly don't NEED firewire to transfer video.
