Which case is the right case?
    #3857260 - 03/02/05 02:45 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I keep reading through the Casing TEKS and there are always these minute differences. One which has me confused is the casing layer (top layer). Is the casing layer supposed to get colonized or just the substrate? Have read TEKS that speak of both happening. Some say its bad if the casing layer gets colonized. Others just say it does and say nothing of it being bad. If the casing layer does get colonized as well as the substrate bellow aren't you inviting the dreaded overlay problem? If that's how overlay occurs then whats the standard method of preventing this? Sorry, I'm sure this has been talked about in detail but time is of the essence. Thanks for any and all replies.

Your substrate is to be 100% colonized before you case it; your casing layer gets partially colonized during the run. The idea is to introduce the casing to fruiting conditions before it runs through the entire casing layer.

Overlay is really an overused term these days. Most people that think they have it, don't. I've seen more overlay issues with coco coir based casings, and that's why I prefer peat moss and verm 50/50 mix.

Some ppl will say that you should drop the temp when the mycelium shows up in 50% of the valleys. other ppl say let it do appear in even more area than that.
This is what i do for peat moss garden lime and vermiculite mix.
Mix 4.5 parts peat moss screaned with mechanics mesh. with 1 part garden lime and 1 part vermiculite. Mix it up real good in a dry state. Saturate it with water. stir it around. let it sit for 15 min. stir it agian to make sure ther are no dry areas. drain excess water off. put on some rubber gloves and make snowballs with the casing. Remove the excess water by packing it into a snowball. give it a squeeze. put the snowball in a seperate container. keep doing this until you figure you have enough for all your casing needs. case your substrate 1 to 1.5 inches thick. use a fork to scratch the surface of your casing. incubate for a couple of days till you see the first signs of mycelium growth. let it go one more day and patch with casing mix anywhere that you see mycelium. scratch this surface. cold shock and then fruit that sucker.
I dont pasturize or sterilize. I keep the rh at 95 to 100% and use a fruiting temp of 73 to 75. Continuouse airflow in the fruiting chamber. Works for me.

I've heard of ppl using straight vermiculite. That sounds alot easier than what i do but i tend to stick with what i know works.
