this is fun

The best part about doing this for the first time is definitely all the apprehension and excitement. AFOAFOAFOAFOAF birthed some PF tek cakes recently. Pins formed 4 days ago, primordia began to grow 2 days ago and get a little bigger, now the whole thing seems to be at a standstill. She's using an automated ultrasonic terrarium, following instructions from MMGG. There are 2 holes @ the bottom of the styrofoam cooler - is the pressure from the incoming mist supposed to be enough to push out the CO2? Is the stalled growing b/c of CO2? My friend thought that they're supposed to grow over night once they get past the primordial stage. A little education can lead to a lot less posting :) Thank you

the mist should both humidify the terrarium while pushing out excess co2. if you think its not doing a good enuf job, you may want to hand fan for a few days and see if theres any help. (youll notice a difference if its the co2 buildup). not really overnight, but more rapidly that what youre describing. cakes also seem to grow less quickly from HQ's experience, than casings do. hows your humidity? it should be relatively high for cakes- about 95% or so. if its too low (which can happen if your ultrasonic is constantly exchanging air and not allowing the humidity to build up) it may also be a cause of the stunted growth. id check one or the other if youre really worried; ie either start hand fanning more if you think its co2 buildup, or slow down the air exchange/hand mist if you think the humidity is not high enuf (no condensation on walls is a good indicator of humidity not being high enuf for CAKES)... but, perhaps theyre just taking a breather to grow a little more for you :) 1st time youre always worried- it gets better the more you do it :) it is fun, isnt it ::grin:: ps, im assuming your veils havent broken yet- that these are stalled pins.

thanx for the insight. The "babies" have been hand fanned for the past 2 days and they're growing a little faster. Humidity might not be a problem b/c the digital hygrometer reads 98% on a constant basis.

also on another note, you might want to drop teh humidity a little. if in fact it is 98 constantly, that may stunt their growth. try to achieve 85% somehow; be it venting or flow valves. that and fanning just might bring you some great shrooms!

How often and how long should the humidity be as low as 85%? I'm confused b/c different sources say different things, and my cakes are at different stages (one's fruiting slowly, the others are still not quite pinning yet). Help

I agree 98% humidity is high especially if your already casing...
Tell me something good then I might agree with you..

okay. im reading id's post to say shes using CAKES. which would mean she needs a much higher rh than for casings. cakes, you wanna get up around 95% for humidity. casings require a lower rh than cakes- they should range from 82-92%. id, HQ's never used a hygrometer, but did you calibrate it before you used it? anno's got a link in here recently about calibrating a hygrometer correctly; apparently they are often "off" when you buy them and ned to be re-calibrated. just found it in grow/find: Calibrate your hygrometer. If youre depending upon an instrument to tell you the correct humidity, you may want to take a look at the link. gluck... (if i misunderstood you about cakes, i apologize for steering you the wrong way).

I am using cakes although their are some cases on the way. The hygrometer is probably pretty accurate (RadioShack) b/c I've measured the ambient temp/humidity and confirmed it w/ the weather reading @ CNN. I've put in a couple of other posts, and the problem is probably a combination of too low temps, too high humidity, and too high CO2. Thanks to all those who have shown interest and helped. You'll get into heaven for sure now.
