Hi cosmicsea,
The pictures are small, and the mushrooms have dried out, so it's hard to tell, but they do appear to be of the genus Gymnopilus.
Habitat? Smell? Taste? (Chew up a little piece and spit it out) Spore color? (I can't tell from the photo)

They were in central florida woods/ flatwoods area. at the base of a large tree probably oak. clustered. spores are orange-rust. <i thought the photos were better than that... maybe yahoo resized them. > i have yet to taste but they smell like it would be nasty-bitter.
thanks

Yeah, those are Gyms. I can't tell you if they are G. spectabilis however. Maybe.

Well cool man. I knew it because of the veil remnant. Maybe some body else can give another opinion, shroomery?
I don't know if the flesh of these fits the flesh description for spectabilis, but these were in February in Florida!!!

hey thanks man, i'm still nervous about attempting a bioassay. but anyways, i appreciate your opinion and i hope some more posters will contribute.
i had a weird feeling they were because right after i picked them (Way out there in the woods) i saw an elf man with 5 baby hogs.
peace

I could not specifically id them as spectabilis. Most likely they are Gymnopilus but what species is anyones guess.

Not worth the risk, too many species in the genus that are not well documented and unknown as far as edibility goes. One would need an actual complete key, which is not easy to find, along with a microscope (supplies and all) in order to get an accurate species ID.

well they are definately a type of Gymnopilus, with a persistant veil, probably not a psychoactive species,
no noticeable bluing or greening,
and i dont have my Gymnopilus monograph with me right now so i couldnt say too much more about your find w/o it
it also helps to know what type of wood they were growing from
spectabilis grows directly from tree stumps, but i dont think yours look like spectabilis anyways
sorry i cant help much more than that without the monograph

the use of the characteristic "persistent veil" is overrated and too broad for narrowing down accurately the Gymnopilus. microscopy verification is needed for for 100%. I have found what I can only and will only key to G.spectabilis in Florida except without definite persistant veil remnants when I was making an id, due to what I believe was caused by extremely hard percipitation from above and from below ricocheting off the stump they were growing. There hasn't been enough of Gymnopilus documentation and overall research to all of the Gymnopilus o rely with a trusting certainty of gyms without a microscope. And even spore characteristics patterns are limited and not near standardized enough.. Gyms with more. Personally I think that there is alot more species.var of gyms that have been id and classified as something they are not, because of characteristics that are too broad for a species with so closely related branches for an under studied mushroom as such.

good point, many gyms look so similar it is damn near impossible to accurately ID without some hard evidence (or a bioassay).

Thank you both for the input. Once again if you know the name of that monograph I am completely dumb about what it's called. Thanks and my truthful honest guess is that there are TOXIC to some degree.

There is one for north american species, written by L.R. Hesler. I tried to order a copy on amazon but they canceled my order because it was unavailable.
